- Vernon Grant Bonebrake, the youngest son of John Frederick and Mildred Hazel Bonebrake, was a shy, studious man. He married Ada Florence Lowry, born 7 June 1931 in Colorado City, Texas, on 2 July 1949 in Roseburg, Oregon. They moved to Ashland, Oregon so he could attend Southern Oregon College of Education. Grant, as he was called, graduated from SOC in 1952 as an Honor Student.
He then taught sixth grade at the Eagle Point Elementary School in Eagle Point, Oregon. In 1957, they moved back to Roseburg so he could be Vice Principal, with teaching assignments, at Central Junior High. In August of 1959, the school, along with much of the surrounding area, was leveled in a multi-million dollar explosion. His thesis papers for his Masters Degree in Education for the University of Oregon were destroyed at that time. Less than one month later, on 11 Sept 1959, he was killed while water skiing for the first time near the R iver Forks on the Umpqua River.
Grant and Ada had five children: Patricia Jean, born 30 December 1949; Mary Elizabeth, born 26 May 1952; Stephen Lee, born 1 September 1953; Teresa Adu, born 20 June 1956; and Carolyn Jo, born 28 July 1958.
Much like his forefathers, Vernon Grant Bonebrake loved fishing and camping. He attended church regularly and loved his wife and family very much. He is buried beside his father and mother at Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
