William A. Witten was born 1806 in East Tennessee. He married Mary Ann Baily, who was born in Tennessee 1807. William and Mary continued to live in Monroe County until 1849. The 1880 (sic) Federal Census of Missouri gives his occupation as a Physician. This family moved to Arkansas and lived near Little Rock from 1849 to 1852. They moved to Independence County Arkansas in 1852 and lived there until 1857. Then it is believed that they moved to Allen County Kansas in 1857.
They came to Jasper County Missouri in 1866 and settled on their farm in Center Township, which was later changed to "Galena Township".
They were members of the Baptist Church. Wm. A. Witten died between 1871 and 1880. After his death, his wife Mary lived with her son, Thomas Witten, until her death after 1880. Both Wm. A. Witten and his wife Mary A. (Baily) Witten are buried on their farm, located one mile west of Bellville, Missouri, on the Missouri side of the Missouri/Kansas line. There is a concrete wall enclosing their graves.
