He When relatives spoke about Ida and Eli , they called them "Grandpap" and "The Old Woman" which is what they called each other. Eli's sole purpose in life was to hide his bourbon in the feed boxes in the barn and Ida sole purpose was to find them and hide them. She did this because a doctor told her that Eli was drinking himself to death; he died at age 92. He told me once that he drank a pint of whiskey a day, smoked a pack of cigarettes and three cigars a day. He said nothing but old age was going to kill him, and that was about right. Eli and Ida ran a general store in Duff, Kentucky until Eli retired in 1955. He was also know as a "horse trader" His last trading spree ran for three or four years and started with an old shotgun, which he had repaired, he traded that for a cow, the cow for a horse etc., and in the end he had a Caterpillar tractor and did not know what to do with it. I last saw the two of them in 1964, the year before I joined the Marines. -- Doyle Sanders October 16, 2004.1
