Census Data: Who's Where When

1860
The first census in which this branch of the Corboy family has been found is 1860. We see both John Corboy and Cornelius Corboy living within three doors of each other in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio.
John (dwelling 722, family 720)(33), is living with Mary (25), Francis (4), Cornelius (2), John (1), and Nancy (60). Who is Nancy? Her last name seems to be Corboy.

1870
Still close to each other in Clay, the households of Cornelius and John have grown. Living with Cornelius is Bridget Corboy, identified as Cornelius' mother. She is 75. Nancy Corboy is no longer with John. Are John and Cornelius brothers or cousins?

1880

Cornelius (note spelling) has remained in Clay, but John has moved.

James Corboy, son of Margaret and John, is living in Washington Township, Brown County, Ohio [Dwelling number 203, family number 208]. With him are his mother, now age 64, and his sister Janie, who is 35. James is a farmer; no occupation is given for the other two. Although Margaret is said to have been born in Ireland, no date is given for her entry into the United States. Note that she is the mother of 12 children, of whom 9 are living. She is obviously including her step-children. We have only ten names so far. It is probably John, born 1859 and only noted in the 1860, who is not living.

Joseph, son of John, is living in Whitewater South, Hamilton County. He is a farm laborer. Born February 1869, which is extremely significant; this is the first time we have actually seen his birthdate, and it turns out to be 1869 after all.

Margaret, the daughter of John, has now married Michael Fay, and is living with him and their small son in Cincinnati, Hamilton County.

1910
Joseph Corboy, born February 1869, is still living in Whitewater and he is still single.

1920
Joseph, whose middle initial we now learn is "R", is still living in Whitewater, and is now married to Carrie C., whom we know from other sources to be Carrie Weisbrodt. They have four children, John J., 6; Loretta C, who seems to be 4 1/2; and twins Cornelius A. and Barbara R., age one year and 5 months.

1930
Joseph, Carrie and their four children are together in 1930. (Barbara R. is listed under her middle name, Rosemary.) We also learn that Carrie was 25 and Joseph was 42 when they were married: so married about 1912.
