Census information for Joel Henry Fay and his family

In order to make them more readable, the images have been left large.

1850

In 1850, Joel Henry and his brother Charles T. are living in Shrewsbury, very close to each other. Both are working as shoemakers. Charles is married to Susan C.

Emily Maynard, Joel's fiancee, is still with her father Benjamin at the time the census was taken. Emily's older sister, Sarah B. Maynard, and her husband, Hiram C. Reed, are also living with the family.

Joel and Charles had a sister, Mariah. No mention of her has yet been found in the census, with one possible exception. In 1850, there is a 13 year old Mariam Fay living in Worcester with a group of people in one household. "Mariam" is not a usual name; there is a slight chance this is she. This Mariam would have been born in 1837, which would make her the daughter of Joel's second wife, Mariam Bigelow. But this is far from certain. This was a close knit family, and it would be surprising if a 13 year old were sent off alone. And this is "Mariam" and not "Mariah."

1870

Joel and his family, by now including 7 children, have reached Claquato.

Joel, age 17 (born 1853), is working as a farm laborer on a neighboring farm.

1880

The 1880 census shows Joel Henry's family in Washington, Lewis County. Joel is using his middle name. 9 children are listed, including the twins Henry and Horace.

Not listed here is William R., who was one or two years younger than his brother Joel. In 1880, there is a William, born in Illinois, listed in the census in Nebraska. He is 26 and is listed with wife Martha and daughter Emiley (2 months). Did Martha die young and Emily marry? with William returning to his parents in Washington in time to be recorded by the 1900 census there? It is certainly possible. It may also be significant that his first daughter's name is Emily.

We know that Charles was married to Olive Joy in 1885, and had one daughter Mary by her. After Olive's death (9/26/1886), Charles married a second time in December of 1897. Mary is living with her grandfather in 1900.
