Census records, WWI registration for Charles Sr., and Social Security entries provided further information. Charles Sr. is first seen as an 8 year old in the year 1900, living in Kansas City, MO, with his parents Matthew and Margaret. Given the information for Matthew, it was possible to go back one more generation, to John and Mary. We see them only in 1880, with three sons, Thomas, Matthew, and Francis; they are living in Queens, New York. Thomas, 15, was born in Ireland; Matthew and Francis were born in New York. This would seem to mean that the family immigrated between 1865 and 1867. I have not been able to document that, nor have I been able to find the family in the census of 1870. I have also been unable to trace Thomas or Francis after 1880. One problem, of course, is that these names are extremely common. However, with Matthew, the trail is clear.
By 1900, Matthew, Margaret, Charles and Mary were in Kansas City, Missouri. For the draft registration of 1917, Charles was in Kansas City, Kansas, where his family remained.
