David and Lucy Fay Mathews' House:
Fairy Tale and Fact

A house in two towns, two counties and two states! see map

Below, the house that David Mathews and Lucy Fay lived in before they built the larger brick one. This was their house at the time of the Battle of Bennington in 1777. It was also called "The Red House," the Col. Baum House, and the Tory House. This house is gone but there is a plaque there. Col. Baum of the British Army was German and did not speak English. All the wounded from both sides were taken here. Lucy Fay Mathews is said to have taken care of them all.
