Extract from Record of the town of Shrewsbury under the head of "Marriage." Moses Fay of Bennington Ver & Mary Hagar of Shrewsbury Oct. 6, 1785. Extract from town record Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., Mass, dated May 15, 1843, sworn by Town Clerk Job C. Stone

On 21 September, 1819, Moses Fay appeared before the Court of Common Pleas of Cattaraugus Co., New York, age 57 ? years, resident of Olean, making the following declaration in order to obtain a pension, "enlisted in fall of 1779 at New Port, Rhode Island in Capt. Walker's Company for 3 years in Col Webb's Regiment of Conn. Troops and was honorably discharged in the fall of 1782."

On 8 Nov. 1820, Moses Fay, resident of Olean, Cattaraugus Co., NY, age 57, appeared in open court and declared that he served in the Rev. War as follows: Capt. Benjamin Walker's company in the regiment commanded by Col. Samuel Webb of the Connecticut line. Service continued nearly 3 years and ended at the close of the war. He declares that he has not disposed of any property in order to diminish it or to bring himself within the provisions to obtain a pension. This lists what few possessions he has and says he unable to farm due to breaking his collarbone five years since. He says he is unable to support his family which consists of two persons besides himself; his wife Mary, aged 56 years, and Electa Place a bound girl aged 16 years.

On 19 June 1843, Cattaraugus Co., New York, Mary Fay appeared before the Court of Common Pleas in order to claim a pension, declares she is the widow of Moses Fay who was a private in the Army of the Revolution and had a pension certificate dated Oct. 13, 1819. She further declared she was married to Moses Fay at Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., Massachusetts, on 6 Oct. 1785, and that Moses Fay died at Hinsdale in Cattaraugus Co., New York, on 11 March 1842. She has not since married and is 81 years of age.

Chronology up to this point: 1761 Moses born 1761 Mary Hagar born 1779-1782 Moses' war service 10/6/1785 Moses marries Mary 1819 Moses applies for a pension which is granted October 13, 1919 3/11/1842 Moses dies 6/19/1843 Mary requests continuation of pension which is approved.

What follows is a series of letters concerning these events. The letters are dated from 1854 to 1926, and the date is set off to make the sequence easier to follow.

State of NY Minton Commissioner of Pensions Olean, Oct. 13th 1854 Dr Sir at the request of Jarvis Fay permit me to ask you what has been done by Mssrs. Cary & Talent in regard to the Pension or land claim for Services of his father Revolutionary Soldier of the Connecticut line. Said Cary & Talent made application to your office for aditional lands, back pay or something else. you will please inform me of the probably Services? Report if any __, & return to me a Schedule of the amount of the Said Soldiers claim issued by Commissionor Edwards in AD 1819 or 1820, the Same being sent by Cary & Co please let me hear from you soon. Please write & give me full information in regard to Pension Money alowed & paid by the Government for Jarvis Fay, the only surviving heir of Moses Fay who served in the revolutionary war. Letterhead reads: Topsham-Brunswich Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution Maine 434 Centre Street Jamaica Plains Mass. May 3, 1926 Dear Sir: Will you kindly give me all the information which you may have at your office concerning a Revolutionary War Pensioner, viz. Moses Fay, private in Conn. line resided Hinsdale N.Y., Cattaraugus County. Is his son Lambert spoken of in the records in any way? I am trying to establish a line to him, and will be most thankful for all information that may be in your possession. I am very truly yours (Miss) Mary Pelham Hill

Box 68, Topsham Maine June 23, 1926 To the Commissioner of Pensions Dear Sir: Will you kindly give me what data you have in your office regarding a Revolutionary War Soldier, Moses Fay. ? He was a pensioner in 1840 resided in Hinsdale New York Cattaraugus Co. a private in the Conn Line. Whatever you may have of dates names or other information regarding this Moses Fay who was in the Conn Line will be appreciated. As will also an early reply. Rev. & 1812 Wars Section July 13, 1926 Miss Mary P. Hill 434 Centre St. Jamaica Plain, Mass. Madam: I have to advise you that from the papers in the Revolutionary War pension claim W 21086 it appears that Moses Fay enlisted in Newport, Rhode Island in the fall of 1779, served as a private in Captain Walker's Company, Colonel Samuel Webb's Connecticut Regiment, was in the battle of East Chester and was discharged in the fall of 1782. He was allowed pension on his application executed September 21, 1819 while a resident of Olean, Cattaraugus County, New York aged fifty-seven years. He died March 11, 1842 in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, New York. Soldier married October 6, 1785 in Shrewsbury, Worcester County, Massachusetts, Mary Hagar of said Shrewsbury (he then of Bennington, Vermont). She was allowed pension on her application executed June 19, 1843 while a resident of Farmersville, Cattaraugus County, New York aged eighty-one years. Soldier's son Jarvis was living in 1856. The name Lambert Fay does not appear in said papers. The names Gershom Fay (in whose stead a part of soldier's service was rendered and Nancy Fay appear, but no relationship is stated. Attention Commissioner: Gentlemen: Referring to your letter of July 13, 1926, addressed to Miss Mary P. Hill, can you, from your records, furnish dates of birth, marriage, and death of Mary Hagar, wife of Moses Fay, Revolutionary War pension claim W-21086. Your reply with requested information will be greatly appreciated. Very sincerely, Elton F. Fay [his signature]

Rev. & 1812 Wars Section Nov. 3, 1926 Elton F. Fay 428 3rd St. San Francisco, Calif. Sir: I have to advise you, that in the Revolutionary War pension claim, W. 21086 of Mary, widow of Moses Fay, the date of her birth is not on record. She was married October 6, 1785, at Shrewsbury, Massachusetts to Moses Fay. And she was eighty-one years old when she applied for pension in 1843. Miss Hill was advised of these two facts in the Bureau letter of July 13, 1926. For the date of last payment of her pension and date of her death, you should apply to the Civil Division, General Accounting Office, Washington, D.C. citing all of the following data. Mary, widow of Moses Fay, Certificate 4457, issued January 17, 1844, rate $33.33 per annum, commenced March 4, 1843, Act of March 3, 1843, Albany, N.Y. Agency. Enlisted as Privates: March 1st? 1778 - Gershom Fay - 3 y Jan'y 19th 1778 - Wil'm Fay - 3 y March 2nd 1778 - Timothy Fay - 3 y April 12th 1777 - John Fay - 3 y

Warren, Dec. 1778 - Thos. M_____, Capt. Jos. Walker's Com'y as specified in the above roll.

These four Fays continue in the Muster Rolls until 4th May 1780 when there is a note saying that John Fay was discharged April 12th 1780. This roll also notes that Gershom Fay was sick at Providence from 5th Nov. 1779.

Then the Muster Roll at Camp _arley dated August 26, 1780 notes that Moses Fay was hired by Gershom Fay.

All four continue in the payrolls until March 1780 when it is noted that Gershom is "sick absent." Same remark for May 1780.
