 A man that hath friends must show himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Set a watch O Lord before my mouth: keep the door of my lips. [Proverbs, XVIII, 24; Psalms 141.3]

There is a second slip containing this verse. Notice that it reads, "A man that wants friends...." The King James version reads, "A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." The RSV verse reads, "There are friends who pretend to be friends,/but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."
This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men [Daniel 4:17]

There are two examples of this verse. Notice that the second has two spelling mistakes (richtest, ware) and a couple of corrections/blots. Were these scraps part of a writing drill?

20. Whoso curseth his father and his mother his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. 30. chap. There is a generation that curseth their father and doth not bless their mother.
The eye that mocketh at his father and despiseth to obey his mother the ravens of the valley shall pick it out and the young eagles shall eat it.
Whoso curseth father or mother let him die the death.
And Moses returned unto the Lord and said oh this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.. yet now if thou wilt forgive their sin: and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which Thou hast written. and the Lord said unto Moses whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. [Exodus 32; note the corrected errors]
the promises of Matt. the 5.th.
and he opened his mouth and taught them saying, blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingom of heaven. blessed are they that ourn: for they shall be comforted. blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God. blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. blessed are ye when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
God is a spirit infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

This quotation is taken not from the Bible but from the Westminster Creed, article 2, from "The Shorter Catechism" which was written by the Westminster Assembly in England and published in 1649.
pride and avarice, makes man a wolf to man

[From The Task and Other Poems by William Cowper:
...I mourn the pride
And avarice that makes man a wolf to man;
Hear the faint echo of those brazen throats
By which he speaks the language of his heart, And sigh, but never tremble at the sound.]
God our tender Father
act but the infants gentle part,
give up to love thy willing heart;
no fondest parents tender breast
yearns like thy God's to make the[sic] blest;
taught its dear Mother soon to know,
the simplest babe its love can show,
bid bashful servile fear retire
the task no labour will require.
the sovereign Father good and kind,
wants but to have his child resigned;

for the eyes of the Lord run to and fro in throughout the whole earth to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. herein thou hast done foolishly therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars. King Asa. [2 Chron. 16:9; spoken by Hanani the seer to King Asa]
When Asa the King trusted in the Lord he delivered him from his enemies. and when he did not trust the Lord he fell under them. his enemies.[This is a summary of 2 Chronicles chaps. 14ff. I do not find an exact match, but the idea is repeated by different prophets to Asa]
Ps[alm] 34th
I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed. This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing. Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.


The face of the Lord is against them that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. the righteous cry and the Lord heareth and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivereth him out of them all. he keepeth all his bones not one of them is broken. Evil shall slay the wicked and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate. [Psalm 34]

Psalm 34 begins on the recto of one piece of paper [previous selection] and is continued here on the verso. The initials on the bottom are a mystery. A. E. Sc? it doesn't seem to be St; and the first letter I would like to be F rather than S.
