Letter from Joseph Mansell to his mother Rebecca (Feb. 7, 1863)

Dear Mother,
This evening desire to write you a line as I haven't heard from you since October last.  I have had a spell of fever I was sent to Lynchburg to the hospital, I was sick about two weeks.  I am now at my Regiment in common health.  We had rainy, snowy weather here a few days since we had snow here 15 inches deep, it is now very fine weather hoping it may remain so for bad weather is awful on poor soldiers.
Mother, I want to see you all very much and hope very much that this awful war will soon come to a close so that I and all other poor soldiers may go home and remain there in peace and happiness the remainder of our days.    Remains your sincere son till Death Departs us asunder
(Killed in action at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863)
