- - - - Well, if you got my last letter you know that poor Mark has been missing since last August.  I have not been able to learn anything concerning his fate.  It is the general opinion that he is dead and I have myself almost given up the last shadow of hope of his being alive.  Andrew Burchfield is Capt. of his company.  He was at home not long since.  He told me he was going to advertise for him and make every effort to ascertain what has become of him.  Least you did not get my other letter I will tell you that he was left in sick camps when Jackson's army went into Maryland.  Afterwards he was sent to a hospital in Richmond and that is the last definite account I have had of him.  Poor Mark, I can see his pensive honest face the night before he left as we all sat by the fire.   I was afraid to look sad least I should distress.  I had a sad foreboding that it would be the last Sabbath night he would ever spend under my roof or by our own fireside and I can fancy a lowly lonely silent grave in a far off land, a grave over which no fond tear of affection has ever been shed.  Silently he sleeps beneath the soil of Virginia, where he perhaps fell a martyr to that devoted land.  Captain Burchfield said that he was a very smart, intelligent young man and that he was every sense of the word what he termed a real gentleman.
