" William Findley's Descendants."

The research on the Fendley family was done by Dawn and Gordon Fendley of Tauranga, New Zealand, from the Family History Library of the Church of the Latterday Saints. The results were confirmed by a cousin Fendley in England.

William's birth place has not been discovered but could have been in Winchester as he joined the army there at the age of twentytwo. It is also possible that he travelled there from elsewhere to join up when the Royal Scotts were stationed there.

William Findley was born 1747, and died 28 July 1805 in Wykes Regis, Dorset, England. He married Joan Jenkins, daughter of Simon Jenkins and Jone Allen, on the 2nd May 1782 in Wykes Regis, Dorset, England., She was born 9 September 1753, and died Unknown.
William joined Royal Scotts in 1769. Below is the a record of the Muster Roles of the 2nd.Battalian, 1st. Regiment of Foot, Royal Scots. Researched by a Friend of Kew.
William first appeared as Entertained (Signed on) on the 10th. November 1769. He was at Winchester on the 7th. February 1770 and again on the 17th. August 1770 but stationed at Jersey. He was listed at Romsey, Hampshire on the 12th. January 1771 but also at Jersey.
Next listed at Minorca in The Mediterranean on the 24th. June 1771. Again at Minorca but this time sick, on the 28th. December 1771. Twice more at Minorca, on the 5th. October 1772 and the 4th February 1773.
He was then listed at St. Philips on the 8th. October 1773 then back at St. Philips on the 7th. July 1774. Then twice more at Minorca, on the 5th January and the 30th June 1775. The second time as on duty.
Minorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands of which Majorca is the largest. St. Philips is possibly on the Island of Malta.
The next listing is "sick" at Fort William on the 18th. March 1777. Then three times at Fort George on the 29th April 1777, on the 25th. August 1777, promoted to Cpl. and again on the 9th. February 1778. Fort William and Fort George are situated in Scotland near Inverness. Again listed as sick at Coxhead Camp 24th. July 1778.
Next listed at Warley Camp 19th. July 1779 and again on the 5th. August. Reduced to Private. He was then at Bedford on the 29th. July 1780. Then twice at Winchester on the 9th.October 1780 and the 19th. March 1781. The next entry he was listed as 'On Duty' at Southsea Camp on the 8th. September 1781. Then at Weymouth on the 25th. March 1782.
He married Joan Jenkins at Wykes Regis on the 2nd. May 1782. Wykes Regis is now part of Weymouth.
He was promoted to Cpl. on the 7th. December 1782 and was listed at Winchester on the25th. March 1783 where he was discharched on the 25th. April 1783. He was listed on the Muster Rolls on the 9th August 1783.
William died in July 1805.

Charlotte Fendley was born 6 October 1782 in Wykes Regis, Dorset, England, and died Unknown.
Children of Charlotte Fendley are:

As far as we have discovered Charlotte was not married and we have not found a father for the children. Hence the name Fendley continued down the line. Our skeleton perhaps.

"James Fendley."

James Fendley was born 25 June 1805 in Weymouth, Dorset, England, and died 18 June 1855. He married Eliza Rogers, nee Hatton, on the 26th September 1846 in St Nicholas Independent Chapel, Melcombe Regis. Eliza was born 1802 in Melcombe Regis, Dorset, England, and died about March 1885 in Melcombe Regis. It would appear that Eliza moved back to Melcombe Regis after James died as according to the 1881 census they were living in Weymouth.

Notes for Eliza Hatton:
Eliza Hatton married Jacob Rogers on the 23rd October, 1822. They had six children. She was widowed on the 16th September, 1839.

"Simon Fendley."

Simon Fendley was born 12 April 1846 in Weymouth, Dorset, England, and died, date unknown. He married Mary Jane Reader, daughter of Ann Orchard and Richard Reader, on the 9th March 1867 in Dorset, England.

xi. Nellie Florence Fendley, born 19 February 1890 in Parkstone, Poole. Died, 16 October 1972 in Parkstone.
Nellie went into service as a nanny to the Drax family of Lychette Maltravers, she also spent some time in London, possibly with the same family. She never married.
xii. Ernest Frank Fendley, born 1894 in Ringwood Rd., Longfleet, Poole.

Simon was aged 21 and resided in Chickerell. Mary was 20 and resided in Chickerell. Simon could not sign the register. Witnesses were, George Knight and Martha Knight. Martha could not sign the register.

Sergt. Charles Findley, of the 2nd Dorset�s, whose home is now Poole, but whose family formerly resided in New Road Purton, has been awarded the D.C.M. for gallant conduct in Mesopotamia.
With only 30 men he held off a large number of Turks and succeeded in rallying some Indian troops, who were wavering. The battle was won by the English and 2,000 Turks were captured.
In Memory of SIMON FREDERICK FENDLEY. Private 3/7866,"D" Coy. 1st Bn., Dorsetshire Regiment. Who died on Wednesday, 5th May 1915. Age 37.

Gordon Leonard Fendley was born on the 16th September 1931 at 45 Haskells Rd., Parkstone, Dorset, England. He married Dawn Phyllis Cartwright, daughter of Edwin Cartwright and Gwendoline Baker, on the 20th September 1952 at St. Andrews Church, Kinson, Bournemouth, England. She was born on the 23rd July 1932 in Bournemouth, England. She died in Tauranga Hospital, Tauranga, NZ. on the 3 November, 2012.
They have three adult children, seven grandchildren and three Great-grandchildren.
