Richard Brown Line

Kathy Gilbert of the Joshua Brown/Chalotte Morris line has done quite a bit of work on it. Below is a descendant chart for this line that she sent in her e-mail of February 29, 2008 3:34 PM. What follows is a series of e-mails written by her, along with some of the pictures etc. that she sent.

Note: On the Jeremiah, son of Joshua above: "he was born 1802 and died 1880 Johnson Co., IA. He did not die in Johnson Co., but in Harrison Co. which is in the western part of the state... The next to oldest child of Jeremiah and Ann Madden was Morris Brown my greatgrand father." From E. A. Brown in an e-mail to me, 4/10/08.

Note: Genealogy fan Eldie Glen Covert is descended from Jane Brown b. 1841. From Glen in an e-mail to me, 4/10/08.

Susan Brown Smawley
Susan Brown Smawley, daughter of Richard Brown. Part Indian according to tradition, but since it's on her mother Sarah Troxler's side it throws no light on the Indian blood in the William S. Brown line. At the bottom of the original it says "D.C. Wolfe, South English, Ia."

I wanted to thank you for all your material on the Browns on your website. I am searching for material on Susan Brown (1827 Huntingdon PA-1909 Keokuk IA). She is the daughter of Richard Brown (1797-1874 Huntingdon PA). (Richard appears on your scanned Bible page for Joshua & Charlotte Brown). I have the note that Grandson Tom E Stull made on Susan Brown. He grew up in Kossuth IA and would visit his mother Lucindas mom Susan Brown Smawley there. Im attaching his note. Tom made a trip to Huntingdon PA in the late fifties to look for information. Tom mentioned the Indian connection for Susan. I found a lady with a tree on Ancestry that also said her ancestor Missouri Brown (daughter of Richard & Sarah) agreed that her mother was part Indian. Susan & Missouris mothers name was Sarah Troxler. On your website you mentioned your Indian search for Elisha Brown. I wondered if you had information as to the tribe that would be in the Huntingdon area in 1807- when Sarah Troxler was born. The couple I talked to in Huntingdon are both related to Missouri Brown. They had their DNA tested but could not find what exact tribe was involved.

BTW, I have a scanned photo of Susan Brown if you would like it for your collection. Susan married John Smawley of Huntingdon and they moved in 1848 to Johnson Cty IA and later to Keokuk. He was an orphan. His Mom died at birth and his Dad died on a cattle drive to Fort Dearborn (Chicago) when he was small. He left as a teen and liked Iowa. He then returned to Huntingdon to work & marry Susan Brown. The couple traveled with their belongings down the Ohio River and up the Mississippi to Muscatine IA. People were amazing then!

Thanks again for your helpful website.

What follows is the note by Tom E Stull that Kathy Gilbert refers to above, written in the late 50's in an old man's scraggly handwriting, preceded by my transcription of it. The town that looks like "Aly ona" seems to be Algona, Kossuth Co. Iowa, as suggested by Ruth Sprowls of Madison, Ohio. Does any one know where the Brown Boys of Penn. book is, or who Mrs Lou Kennedy was? There are a couple of Kennedys in Algona in 1920. 1920 Algona also has this family: Thomas E. Stull, 34, father b. PA (author of the note below); with wife Hazel, 31; dau Elizabeth, 8; and son Thomas, 7. There is also in 1920 Algona a Lucinda Stull, 63, parents b. ?PA, who must be Tom E Stull's mother, right next to a Gertrude Brown, 19. Gertrude Brown and Elizabeth Stull both seem like pretty good candidates for being Mrs. Lou Kennedy. Now, there is an Elizabeth Kennedy in both the SSDI and the CA Death Index, b. 11/25/1912 in Iowa, d. 2/25/1990, but her info seems a bit inconsistent. Another possibility: there's a marriage record in the IGI for Louis Merle Kennedy in 1914, but it's a couple of counties over from Kossuth Co.

Susan Snawley or Smalley.

Susan Brown was born around Port -------- or Burnt Cabans in 1827 on April 15.
Her mothers maiden name was Troxler and her fathers was Richart Brown or Ricky as his friends called him-
On this family on her motherse side or his there was Indian blood whick grand mother at the time did not want to talk about. She was a fine old woman to all her grand children and was the favorite with them all
Grand-mother had two great uncles that were trappers & Indian fighters. There is a book out about the Brown Boys of Penn.
Her mother as a girl had to take refuge in Fort Littleton every time there was a Indian scare
Susan Brown had 3 brothers killed in the battle at Vicksburg
At least that where they were when last heard from.
Her great uncles were two Indians fig fronter--- men known as the Brown Boys of Penn.
Mrs Lou Kennedy of Aly ona had the book. I think it is still in Aly ona.

Subject: Joshua's brother Daniel of Huntingdon

Kathy,

I have been looking for material on Susan Brown (daughter of Richard Brown & granddaughter of Joshua Brown). I saw your info on Joshua Browns youngest son George Washington Brown and looked up material on him in Iowa. When looking through The History of Van Buren & Jefferson Cty IA, I found GWs granddaughter Isabel (daughter of GWs son John L) married Asahel Brown. When looking up Asahel Brown, I found that Asahel was the son of Daniel Brown and had been raised in Huntingdon Cty PA . Asahel had married a woman named Isabelle Steele of Huntingdon. I, then, when to the Trees on Ancestry and found this quote from Pat Thomas on Asahel:

My ancestor Asahel Brown was mayor of Fairfield for a while and he was also postmaster for many years. He had a store that sold carriages, along with his son Daniel Brown. Asahel's oldest son, Isaac (my ancestor) had a blacksmith shop there. Both Asahel and Isaac Brown worked as teamsters when they first moved there. He was the son of Daniel Brown born about 1755 in England and Temperence Harrington born about 1766 in Wales. He has a long sketch in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Jefferson county, Iowa, published in 1890 by Chapman Brothers in Chicago. He had located in Jefferson county in August of 1844. He was born in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania 21 April 1795 and was the son of Daniel Brown. He was reared in Pennsylvania and married Miss Isabella Steele there 11 February 1819. She was also born in Huntingdon county, 15 July 1797, the daughter of Samuel Steele.

She wrote more in her tree and looks like she found the same info in Portrait and Biographical Album of Jefferson County, Iowa, published in 1890 by Chapman Brothers in Chicago. (I can send you the scans I have on both the Asahel & John L Brown page if you think it is worth pursuing). The big thing is that she said Daniel was born in England. Consequently, Daniel would not have ancestors in the US. Since you thought Joshua had a brother Daniel from their shared land purchase in 1785, perhaps there are no US ancestors for these brothers. I dont know if these would then be brothers to William S Brown on your website.

BTW, I did write you last week about Susan Brown and sent a bio that her grandson Tom Stull did in the late fifties based on his talks with her and his trip to Huntingdon Cty PA... I just found another part of your website that talks about another Brown thinking there was a connection to Native Americans. I did talk to the descendants of Missouri Brown (another of Richards children) and they also said that Richards wife Sarah Troxler was part Indian. They have had DNA (both partners of the couple in their eighties are related to Missouri) testing done and they can not identify the exact Indian tribe however.

kathy

Note that the 1755 birth in England that Kathy Gilbert gives for Daniel Brown is, coincidentally enough, very close to the 1757 birth in England that Linda Sue Ellis Stalder's DAR record gives for William S. Brown.

Subject: Brown Immigration

Kathy,

Last night I searched for the immigration records of Pat Thomass Dan Brown (1755 England-1810 Henderson Huntingdon PA). Ancestry had a card with info on an arrival of Dan Brown in 1769 from Peter Coldhams book Kings Passsage to MD & VA. When I searched for Browns in that card source, I came up with James, William and Joseph Brown with adjacent page numbers. I was disappointed that Ancestry did not have the book scanned. (I was hoping that Joseph would actually be Joshua-although he would only be ~4 yrs old). When I went to Google I found out more about the book. (See the interesting quote following the five cards in my attachment). The 5th card is from another William Brown who came in 1769 but his name was noted in American Genealogical Society Quarterly. It gave his age as 45 (1769-45=1724). A suitable age to be a father of these four Browns in Coldhams Book. I decided I needed to see the books so I will go to a library about hour away on Monday and look at the original book entry for all the Browns. The library shows the Coldham Book and the Quarterly in their collection. BTW, I even found a Harrington that came over the year before (1768) listed a few pages earlier than the Browns in the Coldhams Book. Pat Thomas is going to look for more info over the weekend. Dans wife Temperance Harrington came from Wales. I dont know whether England sent debtors from Wales to Maryland too. It would be nice to know if Dan married Temperance Harrington in England & then came over to the US or whether he met her in MD or PA. Since their son Asahel was born in 1795 in Huntingdon, I suspect that they married in the US. Temperance was born in 1766 so it also leads me to believe she came to the US as a daughter and not a wife.

I assume you have a high speed connection so I am going to send an attachment of the
immigration material I found. I will also send a photo of Susan Brown Smawley (Apr 15 1827 Huntingdon PA-Dec 30 1909 Keokuk IA). She is supposed to have Indian blood through her Mom Sarah Troxler. Does she look Indian? BTW, I talked to the couple from Huntingdon who both are related to Missouri Brown (another daughter of Joshuas son Richard) and they both said Sarah was part Indian. They, in fact, had DNA done but no definite tribe was revealed.

I sent you notes on Susan from Grandson Tom E Stull earlier. He said Susan had 3 brothers who died in the Civil War. I have found only two. Washington & Asahel. Both names were revealed in the 1850 census with the family. The two are listed on Huntingdon Genweb as soldiers sent to the Civil War. I have death card info on Ancestry for both. I suspect there might be another older brother that like Susan & Charlotte who had already left the family before the 1850 Census. Do you know of any? I still need to find the married names for Richards daughters. I only have Susans & Missouris. Have you heard form any other direct relatives of Joshuas son Richard?

.........

Subject: Question on Brown's

Kathy,

I forgot to ask in my last email about the Commemorative Bio of Juniata Valley. I saw the pages you provided for Browns of Hancock OH Website concerning Joshua Brown from Grandsons Joshua & Hiram Bios in that book and wanted to make sure no other Browns were in the book. Do you own the book? I cant find it in NJs libraries. I would love to see a Bio on Richard Brown or his sons Wilson (1829- 1880/1900 Huntingdon) & Reuben (1833-1922 Huntingdon). All three Browns farms appeared on the map of 1873 Springfield Township on Huntingdon Genweb. In 1880 Census, Wilsons son George was listed on his own farm in Springfield. By 1900, Wilson is dead and outside of son Geo none of the other sons appear in the township. Reuben had a young wife and 12 children. By 1900 Census, Reubens three oldest sons Wm, Geo, Howard were missing from family and appears had their own farms in 1900 in Springfield.

Richards daughter Missouri married Joseph Ranck and lived in Fulton Cty PA-from the Juniata Books title it appears that county is not in Juniata Valley.

Again,

kathy

Kathy,

I just found Richard Browns daughter Charlotte in Johnson Cty Iowa with a husband. She had been with my Susan Brown Smawleys family in 1850 Census there. I thought I would send you the descendants that I have found in the census for Richard Brown & Sarah Troxler.

BTW, Charlotte Brown Shepardson was on the same page in 1870 Census as a Jeremiah Brown age 68 PA and Morris Brown 42 PA. Morris was also by them in 1860 Census. I think this is the EA Browns family.

Subject: The 4 Brown's immigration in 1769

Kathy,

....I did get to the Historical Library in Morristown on Monday. Unfortunately, my theory that the four Browns that immigrated to Maryland in 1769 came together was proven wrong. I found a copy of the Coldham book that the info cards had been based on in the immigration listing on Ancestry. I turned out that the felons of England that had been shipped to Maryland were from different places. James & Joseph Brown were from Kent and Daniel Brown was from Middlesex but all came on the ship Tryal in Apr 1769. William came from Surrey on the ship Douglas in Aug 1769. The other listing for Wm Brown was based on a runaway listing in MD in 1769 and was from Nat Gene Soc Quarterly. Back to square one!

....

More later,

kathy
