Hello Cuz
We are related to a lot of people that we haven't heard from yet.
I am sure that there are a lot more Browns around we are related to.
You can keep looking also maybe you will find more.
One of the Browns went to Ohio and mar.some woman and had a lot of children and then he left them
And the children were put in a foster home.
He went someplace else and married again and had a lot more.
I bet there are children everywhere in that area.
We will have to find the names of them
Well i better quit for now I will write later.

Hello Fred and everyone else.
The name Braun or wn was like my dad told me.
Our family was first in Md.then Penn.My dad used to tell me we were Penn Dutch but
was not sure.
Our family on the Cushman side came over here on the Fortune was in England then they
went to Holland
and then they came over here.
Robert Cushman Procured the Mayflower to bring the people over here and then he had
to do other things
and started out on the Speedwell I think and it started taking on water and they turned
back.
Robert and his son Thomas came on the Fortune.
What I am getting at is the Browns,Cushmans,Millers,Comptons,Devores,Lanes ,were all
in the same area as they
started in Md,Then Penn,then Ohio,finally Illinois.in Shelby Co.
I am almost positive we are all the same family.
They were all big families.
Getting back to the name Braun or Brawn sounds the same were Gereman or Dutch
My mom used to call the Dutch the Hook and Eye dutch because they didn't use buttons,
We lived by an Amish settlement in by Arthur Ill.
We lived in Mattoon which is only 20 miles away.
We used to Pheasant hunt by them in the winter time,
Their children went to the 8th Grade and then they started to work on the farm full time.
I went there one time and built a porch on the back of their home and some work in side.
Everything was done by a handsaw as they do not have power,
The people had 11 children 9 girls and 2 boys.
The girls worked as well as the boys.
They had a meat processing plant on the farm and was run by a steam engine.
If you ever get a chance to go see the settlement you will enjoy it.
They have all kinds of crafts at Arthur when they have their fair in the summer.
Well I have gone on&on and haven't said anything so I will quit for now.
Have fun
Bob

Hello Fred
My family started i Md,then Penn,Then Ohio,then Ill.
Md William,1815 ,Mose,Ferdinand,Catherine,maybe more.
The family was in Franklin Co.Ohio for a while also.
My GGrandfather was in the Ohio Calvary in the civil war James Franklin Brown
mar.Martha Miller.
When the family moved to Ill.it was in and around Shelby,Co.
They were in a little town called Old Mode and New Mode just a wide strip in the road.
My parents were born there.
Part of the family was born in Ohio and then the reast in Ill.
William Brown mar Mary Ann Fickle 1842 in Ohio.
I am almost positive that our family with the Lanes,Millers,Compton,Devore, are all tied in
with William And
Ruth Lane.
John Wesly Lane was my moms grandfather.
Another name is Alferd Elsworth Brown was my dads uncle had he lived which ties in with
the actor.

Thanks Fred
I am just learning how to add the pictures so bear with me.
The more I hear about the Ruth Lane being an Indian the more I beleive it.
On my moms side they were all dark complected.
My brother and sisters were dark brown hair and eyes and they looked liked they had a suntan year around.
On the Brown side I am the shortest about 5-9 or10
My brother and uncle and cousins were and are over 6ft.
They are tall and lean and they do not have a heavy beard or hair on their chest.
I have to shave twice a day and have hair on my chest.
I am the odd ball I guess.
My dad took after the Cushman side of the family with hasel eyes and I have the same.
When my brother was young he had blond hair andthen it turned dark.
I had blond hair then it turned a little darker.
My brothers son has blond hair and he is in his fifties.
My nephews all have blond hair.
I have 4 daughters and 3 of them have blond hair.
Like I said I look like my dad and the rest look like my moms side.
She was a Miller and lane and they look like indians.
I saw where someone wrote about drinking milk I drink a lot of it.
There are a lot of carpenters in our family also.
That would tie in where William Brown was helping build the fort where they had a lead smelter.
My GGGrandfather William Brown born 1815 was a wheel rite or right where he made wheels for the wagons.
I have been a carpenter for over 50 years.
I will try to put the pictures on the line if I can not do it when my kids come over for Easter I will get them to do it.
I added the Cushmans on the message because there are a lot of Browns that are related to them.
My Dads mother was Pearl Mae Cushman born 1881 married Elmer Brown born 1881
The Cushmans came over on the Fortune.
I know this is susposed to be Browns but, they are a big family and are related.
We are also related to the Millers my mother,Comptons,Devores,Beards,Lee,Iller,Griffith, many more.
When I learn how to put the pictures on I will attach them.
My nephew Preston Brown also has a lot on the family.
Willy is also related.
Thanks again for letting me on your page.

I still think if there is any Indian it is on my moms side.
Her mother was Arminda Lane.
Father was John Wesley Lane this is why I think that we tie in with your family because of my moms side were
all dark complected.
Her father was John Alva Miller born 1873 I think the Miller side came from England in the 1600s maybe?
I think the reason he was dark also because years ago they intremingled before he was born.
Because it is the Millers that are on the dark side.
My mom said that one of her ancesters married one of the islander when he came over here.
That would be the reason to look like an Indian.
She said her G_______Grandfather Lane was the one that was on one of the ships he could have been a
sailor?
She said they stopped on one of the islands so it could be true,
As far as the Brown side my dad used to tell me are name had been changed when they came over here.
That was back in late 1600S early 1700S maybe?
My GGGrandfather William Brown bn.Balt.Co.Md Sept.22,1815 so it all ties in with your family.
I have been trying to find out more about John Wesley Lane
We should get Ann O'Rourke in this group.
She sent me a message about her family which is the same.
This is what she has written.
I just came across your posting re Becky and Socia Brown and the Van Lue family,Rebecca and Socia Brown
are two of the six children born to Elisha Brown and Elizabeth Stothe.
They also had four sons;Elisha,Elijah,Abraham and Jacob.
Elisha (the father)was the son of William and Harriett (according to family records)Lane,And again according to
family records,William was born in Baltimore.
Abraham Browne (family spelled it with an "e" at the end was a doctor in Van Lue around 1854-1860
and 1865 through 1870.( not sure about the last date)
My husband is a decendant of Abraham Browne.
This was what I received from her.
Some of the family went to Shelby Co.Illinois.
Abraham was in or around Tower Hill and mine was around Old Mode and New Mode Ill.
Tower Hill is only about 10 miles from there.

Here is the form you can go to it and check the rest of it out.

Good luck.

Sara mar.Charles Henry Iller b.12 Feb 1847 in Va.m.Jan.1871
Sara was my G G.Aunt William and Mary Ann Fickles daughter.

Cuz,

I made a note to myself once to see if I could trace John Wesley Lane in
the censuses to find out if he might be Indian. I finally decided to do
it. I've looked for him in 1900, 1910, & 1920 on OK and TN, and 1880 TN,
with no luck. I did find a Malinda Sands in 1880 - she was married to
him July 1880, right? The only problem is her age, it should be about 25
and it's 21. Think this is the right family?

John Wesley Lane was my mothers Grandfather and he married Malinda Sands
Their daughter Arminda Lane was their daughter married John Alva Miller bn 1873
were my mothers parents.
My grandparents and GGrandparents.
My mother told me that one of the lanes was on a ship either a sailor or just traveling
on it
that they came up through one of the Islands and he married her.
I can not proove this all I know is that all of her family were dark complected like an
indian.
My two sisters and my brother are the same with the real dark eyes and dark hair.
My brother died when he was 46 of a heart attack.
His son has blond hair like mine used to be plus there are a lot of blonds in our family
with
blue and hazel eyes.
John Wesley Lane bn abt.1851 mar.Malinda Sands 1880 Arminda was bn.1881

I am not sure about where John died if in Ok.or Ark,or Tenn??
They were in all three areas.
They were in Hawkins county Tenn.then Alabama, then OK.then they have
John Wesley died April 1923 Ok.
They were in Allen OK.Eliizabeth died 1902 and then all they have is he died as
above.
My mother and two sisters went out there and tried to find him when our relatives
were still
alive but, they could not find anything.
...
My dad used to tell me that we were Penn.Dutch for whatever that is worth.
I guess his dad told him that.
His grandparents were dead before he was born.
His grandfather died in 1902 and he was born in 1906
I guess that his dad told him things that his granfather told him.
Back then that is about all they had to do after dark was to sit around and tell stories.

John Wesley Lane probably died in Pontotoc Co. OK. I think Ada is where the
courthouse is. Here's their website:
https://sites.rootsweb.com/~okpontgs/
Now, did this family go from Tenn. to Ark. or to Alabama?
I somehow got the idea once they might have come out of North Carolina.
...
As far as being Pennsylvania Dutch, Brown could have been spelled Braun once, but
if your Browns came out of Baltimore, it's more likely your dad was talking about one
of the female lines.

Fred
You are talking about them moving around and Ada Ok then it makes sense to me
because
they must have been close to the Cushmans because my grandmother Pearl
Cushman
was born in Veneta,Ok.
The family went out there when they had the land rush.
My dad used to have relatives in Ada.
I met them before my mother died they came over to visit her that was in 1994.
The Cushmans then came to Illinois.
When my dad was talking about the Penn.Dutch I think what he could have been
talking
about was that he allways said our name had been changed when they came over
here.
My GGGrandfather William Brown was born in Balt.Co.Md.also his brothers that we
have for sure.
I have had people send me papers about more in the family but,I do not have proof of
it.
They then went to Penn.and then they went to Ohio where James Franklin Brown my
GGreatgrandfather was born.
All of his family were born there and then they moved to Ill to Shelby Co.
Later the family moved to Mattoon,Ill where I was born.
By them moving could be that they were farmers and carpenters they probably
moved where the work was at.
I have moved a lot my self being a carpenter for 50 years I have been in a lot of
places.
I have lived in this town for 40 years but, before that I made several trips to Calif.
I worked in large subdivisions till they finished up and then went to another one.
I was a contractor for 36 years so I have worked in a lot of places.
I worked off and on in St.Louis,Mo.from 1965 to 2002 when I finished up where we
live at.
I worked in Decatur,Ill for a year driving back and forth.
I have worked as far as 90 miles one way from home and drove every day to the
jobs.
So you are talking about moving I think that William might have worked at the fort
they built
I can not think of the name of it when the war was going on.
Ithink it was a lead mine where they got the lead for the bullets.
I do not have proof of this I just have what I have picked up on the computer that
people have
sent to me.
I do know for sure that William was a wheelright.
He made wagon wheels and the wagons and probably built houses also.
His son James Franklin also was a carpenter.
My dad was and his cousin Charles Compton.
I talk to much.
I get to talking about the carpenters in the family and I have a nephew is one plus his
bro.
that died.
I got off the track but,I think that is the reason that the family has moved so much.
Later instead of moving I just drove or stayed in a motel.
I worked in StLouis where the carpenters came up from Alabama and stayed from
Mon.
till Fri.and then they would drive home.
I have to quit for now as I said I talk to much or I should say I write to much.

    FRED
THE REASON I SAID THAT I THOUGHT THAT WE WERE HERE EARLIER THAN
THAT IS BECAUSE I HAVE A BOOK JOHN HOWLAND OF THE MAYFLOWER
VOLUME 1 WHERE ELIZABETH HOWLAND OF THE MAYFLOWER DAUGHTER
LYDIA HOWLAND 1633-1710 MAR JAMES BROWN
RUTH HOWLAND 1646-1679 MAR THOMAS CUSHMAN WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN
MY GRANDMOTHERS GGGGRANDFATHER MORE OR LESS SHE WAS BN IN 1881
I HAVE ALL HER RECORDS BACK ABOUT 1200 I THINK
ROBERT CUSHMAN AND HIS SON THOMAS CUSHMAN CAME HERE ON THE
    FORTUNE.
HE PROCURED THE MAY FLOWER AND COULD NOT GO AT THE TIME AND HE
STARTED ON THE SPEEDWELL I THINK IT WAS AND IT STARTED LEAKING AND
THEY TURNED BACK AND WENT ON THE FORTUNE.
GETTING BACK TO JAMES BROWN MY GGRANDFATHER WAS JAMES FRANKLIN
BROWN AND MY DAD HAD A BRO NAMED JAMES ALSO
    ...
I DO KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THE CUSHMANS WENT TO HOLLAND AND LIVED
BEFORE THEY CAME TO AMERICA IN THE 1600S
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY MORE THAT YOU HAVE ON IT.
    THANKS
    BOB
