The Edgertons

The Edgertons

Most of these pictures are from Eric Marshall. I have pictures now of all Hiram Edgerton's family except his first wife Louisa Pomeroy and his daughter Sarah. First is a picture of Hiram Edgerton, 1800 (or 1799) to 1871, father of Laura C. Edgerton. His grandfather Isaac Hall's cousin Lyman Hall was a signer of the Declaration. "Picture taken by A. A. Townsend, Photographer, Gowanda, NY." Then another picture of Hiram e-mailed me by Scott Coyle, from the collection of Esther Sawdey Lennertz and Harriet Sawdey. Scott's notes: "Hiram Edgerton - He died at 70. In the picture you have posted," - the one on the left - "he has a white beard. In this picture he has a black goatee. He looks a good ten years younger in this picture than the picture you have posted. My guess is that he's in his 50's in this picture."

Next, on the left is a picture from Scott Coyle of Laura Cordelia Edgerton Marshall AKA Grandma M. At right, from Eric Marshall, is a picture of "'Aunt Mariette Leonard - Grandma M's sister - wife of Nelson Leonard' - picture by E. A. Edgerton, Gowanda, NY." Must be the eldest daughter of Hiram Edgerton, as well as having a niece and great-niece named after her.

Eric's notes on the picture below: "William Eugene Marshall, Grace Greenman, and Uncle Daniel Edgerton.
Aunt Maria Merrill, Grandma Marshall, Aunt Mary Edgerton, Emma Lyons Burch.
Florence Burch".
And: "Maria pronounced her name with a long 'I' so it was Ma - rye - a.... I think this picture was taken at the Walling farm just east of the house. This 'Aunt Mary Edgerton' Is Uncle Daniel Edgerton's wife - Not to be confused with Mariette Leonard..."
My note: George N. Marshall married Emma L. Edgerton, so Emma Lyons Burch and the other Burch here probably have something to do with his line.

Eric says, "'Uncle Ed Edgerton - Grandma M's brother' - picture was taken by H. Krueger, Photographer 62 Canal St., Grand Rapids, MI." Grandma M. was Laura Cordelia Edgerton. Scott Coyle theorizes that this was her half-brother: "Hiram had a second family with Mary Ann Judd. Sometime after the death of Hiram, Mary Ann resided with their son Edmund Augustus Edgerton in Lansing, MI - which is about 70 miles from Grand Rapids." That means that the man with the mustache is probably Edmund, son of Hiram Edgerton, and the woman on the right his wife Lenna Miller Edgerton. None of the others here are identified. They were married in 1888, so this must have been taken somewhere around 1900:

From Bob Glazier's e-mail to me of 19 Jul 2012 regarding the picture below: "I have received permission to post the attached photograph to your website. It is Rose & Frank Edgerton's house in Crystal Colorado about 1890-1895. This photo was sent to me by Richard Sickert who has been doing extensive research on the Edgertons. I believe he is from the Hamlin line. From left to right the people are: Judge Tom O'Brian, George Melton, Martha Melton, Don Edgerton, Rose Edgerton, Frank W Edgerton, Geogie (Rose & Frank's son, boy with hat) Unknown couple and unknown girl." Below it are closeups of Rose and Frank. You can tell they're pioneers. You wouldn't see pictures like that from New York or Erie from that time. Frank was the half-cousin of Laura Cordelia Edgerton, their common grandfather being Philip Edgerton.
