Notes

* Christopher may be a baptismal name.  Notes by a granddaughter states that his given name was George; a letter from a grandson states that his given name was Joseph.  The name Christopher does not appear in any of the names of his early descendants; whereas, the names Joseph and George do appear.  Supposedly, the given names of Christopher’s father and mother were Georg and Anna (Pearl Mix Cox, “The Ancestors and Descendants of Thomas Lyon Mix,” copyright 1979, p. 59) (FHL US/CAN Fiche 6088170).  “[I]t was common in the middle 1700s in the Germanic areas to use only the second baptismal name in official records in later life.  The first name was that of a parent or grandparent and was given as a compliment but never used officially.”  (Angus Baxter, “In Search of Your German Roots, 1994, p. 75.)  Therefore, one must keep an open mind as to the real given name in this instance.  From the grandchildren’s writings, which described their parent’s siblings, it is clear that they are writing of the same grandfather.  I use “Christopher” because that is the way his name appears in the 1790 census, in a history of Westchester County (Alvah P. French, “History of Westchester County, New York,” 1925, Vol. IV, p. 473), and in a “centennial” book (Commemorative Biographical Record of Dutchess County, New York,” 1897, p. 418).

** The Kile surname.  Christopher’s surname is spelled as either “Kile,” “Kiel,” Keil,” or “Kyle” in records, books, and by his descendants.  Christopher’s two boys (who were both literate) and their descendants always spelled their surname as “Kile.”  Land and probate records confirm it.  However, some of Christopher’s daughters and their families, as well as two “centennial” books, spell the surname as either “Kiel” or “Keil.”  The 1790 federal census for North Castle, Westchester Co., NY, listed him as “Christopher Kile.”  A “Christopher Kiel,” under COL Thomas Thomas, of the Westchester Co., NY, Militia, was convicted by courts-martial for desertion on 29 SEP 1776; I believe that he is my “Christopher.”  I use the spelling for each of Christopher’s children surnames as their names appear in the various books and writings.  I use “Kile” for Deborah based on Ernest Freeland Griffin’s “Westchester County and Its’ People: a Record,” 1946 (Vol. III, p. 118).  But, David L. Mix in his 1989 IGI submission spelled Deborah’s surname as “Keil” (Batch No. 8992103-11, FHL Microfilm No. 1,553,680).  I use “Kiel” for Anna based on “Commemorative Biographical Record, Fairfield County, Connecticut to 1899,” (p. 854).  I use “Keil” for Phoebe based on Commemorative Biographical Record of Dutchess County, New York,” 1897, (p. 418).  For Hannah, I use “Keil” because that is the way her Sutton family always spelled it.  For Elizabeth and Mary, I use “Kile” as the default spelling because there is no written record and that is how my ancestor George Kile spelled it.

*** Christopher’s birth date and place information.  The “centennial” book printed in 1897 of various inhabitants of Dutchess County, NY, gave the given name and date of birth as “Christopher” born on “15 OCT 1747” (Id.).  Also, Alvah P. French’s “History of Westchester County, New York,” 1925 (Vol. IV, p. 473) and Pearl Mix Cox’s book (p. 59) concur.  Ms. Cox could have obtained her information for her book from French’s book.  [NOTE: several of Ms. Cox’s listed birth dates for the children are incorrect.]  Christopher’s two grandchildren state that he came from Germany.  A letter dated 12 JUL 1889 by Christopher’s grandson stated that “[Joseph] came from Germany, a young student.”  The 1906 notes by Christopher’s granddaughter state “My grandfather, George Kile, was a German, born in Germany, do not know where.”  Kile F. Nightingale in his 1986 IGI submission gave the place of birth as Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany – not verified (Batch No. 8602880-18, FHL Microfilm No. 1,396,155).  Another possibility is the Rhine area where the name “Kile” appears.

*** Arrival in America in 1765.  Pearl Mix Cox’s book at page 59 states that “Christopher was a stow-away and came to America as a young man of 18 years.”  Born 1747 + 18 = 1765.

**** Mary Tucker.  Both grandchildren listed the name of their grandmother as Mary/Polly Tucker, as well as the previously mentioned books.

The current evidence indicates that the two grandchildren did not know each other and that they obtained their information from their respective parents.  One family was in northeastern Ohio; the other family was in New York City.  The notes and letter indicate that the two families did not visit each other.  Both grandchildren were probably born after Christopher and Mary Tucker Kile had died.

Kit 24841 is proven to Christopher Kile

The above information is as of 13 MAY 2006

Additional Comments

CAUTION!!  Work in progress.  There may be ERRORS in some of the family information as I used censuses, newspapers, tombstone inscriptions, books, IGIs, holdings in libraries and historical societies, etc. that may be inaccurate.  Use with care and treat this information as a starting point.  Verify the information because I make ASSUMPTIONS that I continually revise as I gather more information, e.g. dates and places.

Still need to research the New York Palatines.  Also, I need to research the Kiel, Koel, and Kile individuals, who lived in the vicinity of Christopher, to see if they are related, e.g. John Jurry Koel/Cole (Phillipsburg, circa 1720); John Kiel (tenant Philipse Manor, 1767); and James Kile (Third Regiment, Westchester County Militia, 1775).  Then there is the Kiles of Orange Co. and Rockland Co., NY (early 1800s) as well as the Kile families in CT, MA, VT, and NH (late 1700s).  DNA can definitely help sort them out!

Seven to nine generations have been born since Christopher Kile married Mary Tucker around 1771.  Based on my research tracing Christopher’s two sons, I speculate that after 235 years there are only 50 to 100 male Kile surnamed individuals alive today in 25 to 50 households that descend from Christopher Kile.

Since Y-DNA Haplogroup K2 (recently reassigned by FTdna to T) is uncommon, your DNA results will tell if you and I are recently related and if you belong to this small circle of living relatives of Christopher Kile.  The Y-DNA test will tie Christopher’s family together for generations to come and will help find our German cousins.
