Kit 71248 Proven to Philip Coyle

Notes for Phillip Coyle:

Phillip Coyle first appeared on any record I have found in the 1798 Federal Direct Tax List for Somerset Co., PA. The Federal Direct Tax was

one on Window Panes in the house and contained other detailed information such as dimensions of cabin and size of logs.

1798

Phillip Coil, 200A, Non cleared, 1 cow, $1.50 Tx (this is first appearance of Phillip and is living next door to Andrew Campbell.) There is no deed

in Somerset Co by which Phillip purchased or sold this land but lady at Historical Society advises they have seen cases of this type before when taxes were paid and no deed.  Andrew Campbell, 319A, 1 house, 1 horse, 2 cattle

1799

Phillip Coyle, 200A, 3cleared, 1 house, 1 cow, Value 220. Tx 1.15 No Campbells

Note that in 1798 none of his land was cleared while in 1799 he had cleared 3 acres.

1800

Phillip Coyle, 200A, 3 cleared, 1 house, 1 cow, Value 220., Tx. .92 No Campbells

1801

Phillip Coyle, 200A, 3 cleared, 1 cabin, 1 cow, Value 220., Tx .92

Andrew Campbell, 310A, 12 cleared, 1 house, 2 horse, 3 cows, Tx .35

Did not check beyond 1801 but is available through 1815.

Note: There was a Phillip Croyle living next door to Phillip Coyle in 1801, thought that strange.

This tax list has much detail if you want to look it up. Example-John Campbell on the 1796 list owned 64 acres on which he had a 23 x 24 log cabin, 2 story, 9 windows with 145 lights.

Catholic Baptisms in W. Pa. 1799 - 1828.  Father Peter Helbron's Greensburg Register by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 1985

These original records can be found at St. Vincents Abbey in Latrobe, Pa (Audrey Fetter of the Butler Co, Pa. Library advises me that Father Helbron had a valid reputation of "very poor spelling" as he was German so names are frequently misspelled.)
