After his first marriage, he lived in Louisa County, Virginia for awhile and was Clerk of the Camp Creek Quaker Meeting at Green Springs. After the formation of Campbell County, Virginia in 1782 David was by that division placed in that county. He was devout Quaker and freed his slaves in 1782. His home was near Senaca Creek, which flowed through his plantation. He owned considerable amounts of land, not only in Campbell but some in other counties. In 1760, he was granted 1,075 acres in Lunenburg County. In his will he left his interest in 400 acres in Halifax County to his brother, Chiles.
