Some Historical Notes on the Life of Daniel Harper
In 1755, Daniel was 19 when he left on the British military expedition to Canada to expel the French (our LaMoreaux ancestors). He lied about his age, claiming to be 21. This expedition is the one noted by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in "Evangel ine." The expedition left exactly two weeks to the day of his father's, Andrew Harper, death.

Daniel lived in many towns, including Ashburnham, Shirley, Littleton, Mass. and also Rindge, N.H. It goes on to say, "It appears that during a part of the Revolution he was in Jaffrey as his service in that war in 1781 was credited to Jaffrey. H is frequent removals would indicate that he was by nature a roving planet or that his occupation controlled his migration." Daniel is recorded as having sued his father-in-law James Colman for selling "putrid pork." The indictment of 1762 read s as follows:
"The jurors for the said Lord the King upon their Oath present that James Coleman of a place called Dorchester Canada in the said County of Worcester Yeoman did on the Last Day of April Last at a place called Dorchester Canada aforesaid falsel y and deceitfully & wickedly expose to Sale a certain putrid & corruped Hog which ye said James well knew died of a mortifying distemper & the Flesh whereof was unwholesome & distructive to the Human Body & that the said James then & there fals ely & deceitfuly & wickedly exposed and sold the said putrid & corruped Hog to one Daniel Harper, he the said James Coleman at the same time well knowing the same Hog to be putric & corrupted, unwholesome & distructive as aforesaid & to have d yed of a mortifying Distemper as aforesaid to the Deceiving Impoverishing & Destruction of the leige Subjects of the said Lord the King tasting or eating thereof, to the great Damage of the said Joseph Goodridge in Evil & Pernicious Example t o others and against the Peace of the said Lord the King his Crown & Dignity."
James essentially entered a plea of no contest, submiting himself to the grace of the court.
