Teacher, writer Gladys Fitchett dies at 94
GLADYS FITCHETT, 94, Teacher
Gladys E Fitchett, a Merced resident for 73 years, died Saturday at a local health care facility.
She was born June 6,1904 in San Francisco. She graduated from Fresno State University and was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also an instructor at Chapman College. After many years of teaching in a number of area schools, she worked for the county office of education as a language arts consultant. She co-authored "Reading Rights for Boys," a book on education.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, past president of the California Retired Teachers Association, and was active in the Friends of the Library Club.
In 1989, Mrs. Fitchett and Dr. William Fountain served as grand marshal of a parade celebrating Merced's centennial anniversary. Both were chosen for their contributions to the community, said her daughter, Lois Parker. "She had been recommended by several groups.
She was wonderful. She had so many people that dearly loved her.
Survivors include her daughters, Lois Parker and Alma Kollmann, both of Merced and Sarah Foster of Bakersfield; sons Robert Fitchett of Berkeley and Raymond Fitchett of Merced; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. at lvers and Alcorn Funeral Home of Merced.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at United Methodist Church on Yosemite Parkway. The Rev. Doug Norris will officiate. Burial will be private. '
