Notes for Joseph F. (Spouse 1)
Fitchett family information prior to Joseph (born circa 1736) is family lore and has not yet been documented.

James deFichet (#1) arrived in New Amsterdam circa 1623 on the third ship to arrive with settlers. He was born in Wallonia circa 1600 of Huguenot descent.

Joseph (son of #1) married Margriet Bronck, daughter of Jonas, a wealthy settler of Manhattan. Jonas died in 1643. The Bronx is named after him.

James (grandson of #1) wife is believed to be Cerise, of French and Oneida Indian ancestry. James is the father of Joseph (born circa 1736).

Joseph Fitchett was born in Ulster County, New York Province. He grew to a height of 5’11”, became a carpenter by trade and around 1753 married Sarah Dillea. The unrest that was coming to a head in Quebec between Wolfe and Montcalm was threatening to boil over into New York and the populace quickly formed a militia to guard their homes. Joseph was number 25 on the Muster Roll of Captain Robert McGinnis’s Company on 31 Oct 1755 as one Joseph “Phitchet”. On these same rolls we find Henrich Fitchett and Abraham Fitchett, age 25, born in Richmond, dated 17 Sept 1759. I assume these are Joseph’s brothers. The French Wars as it was called; ended in 1759 on the Plains of Abraham when both Wolfe and Montcalm were mortally wounded. Battles had been fought at Oswego, Ticonderoga and along Lake George. (All in present day New York.)The turmoil that preceded the Revolutionary War made it necessary to continue keeping a militia, so on 19 April 1762, Joseph Fitchett joined Captains Lintion’s Company of Ulster County, New York and was shown as number 14 on the Muster Roll dated 20 June1762. His age was interpreted as 30, no doubt the writing being so illegible as to make 36 be misunderstood. On 27 April 1770, Sir Wm Johnson included Joseph’s name to be inserted in the Patent for the Northern Tract of 80 thousand acres in the rear of Kingsborough, alias Sturats Purchase.25
