Notes for Joseph Roberts CHADBOURNE
JOSEPH ROBERTS 8 CHADBOURNE (166. Levi 7 James 6 John 5 James 4-3 Humphrey 2 William 1), born Sanford 19 Oct 1824; died Suisun Valley, Solano Co, CA 24 (Bible) or 27 Mar 1863 (gs); married Sanford 14 Oct 1855 RUTH ANN HOBBS, born Sanford 9 Mar 1833, died Suisun CA 9 Jan 1902, daughter of Nathaniel and Priscilla (Getchell) Hobbs of Sanford. [page 289] Ruth married second 2 Apr 1864 (Solano Co Marriages) or 4 Apr 1864 (Sacramento Bee index) James Hamilton. Descendants of Joseph and Ruth enjoy a double line of Chadbourne descent as Ruth Ann 9 is of the Patience (Chadbourne) Spencer line by Priscilla 8 Getchell, Ephraim 7 Getchell, and Phebe 6 Gray #29.ii.4.
Joseph moved to CA probably before 1850, when he was not in Sanford in the US Census. Unfortunately, no 1850 US census for Solano and other bay area counties exists, but he was listed as a voter in Suisun Valley in 1852. He started his home and orchards and returned to Maine to marry Ruth Ann in 1855. They returned to CA, planted fruit orchards, and started a profitable farming enterprise. After Joseph died at age 38, Ruth Ann ran the ranch, raised the children, and saw that they all got a start in farming on their own. She was respected by the farmers of the valley for what she accomplished in a day when women were not known to be able to run their own properties.
Ruth and James Hamilton had four children together. The marriage was an unfortunate one and was dissolved, with the four children being listed in all censuses and papers as Chadbournes. Their descendants are known as such to this day, and are therefore included. Joseph and Ruth Ann are buried in the Fairfield Cemetery, he being the first man buried in the new Masonic Section. CFA's Elaine Bacon knows and researched this family.15

The Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges in Suisun purchased about 10 acres of land about half a mile north of town on a hill for a cemetery. Joseph R. Chadbourne, a resident of Suisun Valley since 1851, died in San Francisco, leaving a wife and four small children. He was to be buried at the new Masonic burial grounds. 46
Notes for Ruth Ann (Spouse 1)
Descendants of Joseph and Ruth enjoy a double line of Chadbourne descent as Ruth Ann is of the Patience (Chadbourne) Spencer line by Priscilla Getchell, Ephraim Getchell, and Phebe Gray.15
