Sumaria is buried at a cemetery where the New Hope Baptist Church of Christ of Primitive Faith and Order which served the community for over half a century until it was disbanded in 1945. Sometime afterward, a memorial building was erected on the site of the church and is still used by the local residents. The well kept cemetery across the road contains the graves of Samaria Cagle Nix and at least one of her children, Athens Cagle Hudson, 1881-1939, who married William Joseph Hudson, 1877-1965. Samaria remarried Virgil Nix whose family lived near the Community of Jones Chapel in Western Cullman County, AL near the New Hope Baptist Church, which Virgil Nix had helped to organize in the early 1890s. The family along with Virgil Nix are listed in the Cullman Co., Alabama Census for the 1900 Census. All are listed except Nancy and E.J. who were married by the time of the census.55
Notes for Jesse Martin (Spouse 1)
Jesse Grew up on his fathers farm, then met and married Samaria Duke of Polk County, Georgia on January 17, 1878. At the time of the 1880 census for Haralson County, Newman Dist #1078, he was listed as head of household with Samaria as wife at age 24, b. AL; dau Nancy I age 1 and dau Caria age 3/12. Between 1880 and 1884, Jesse acquired four separate 40 acre tracts of land in Haralson County, one of which adjoined his father’s. In 1884, he also served as agent for Welcome Duke, his father-in-law in acquiring a 300+ acre farm on the boundary of Haralson and Polk. Welcome Duke served as a witness to the Will of Benjamin in 1869, and to it’s probate in 1894-96. In April 1887, Jesse petitioned the Court for the probate of his father’s Will but, the request was denied, presumably on the grounds Jesse’s mother was still alive. Ironically, Jesse never inherited from his parent’s estate for he preceded his mother in death by dying in 1890 at the age of 34, leaving a widow and 8 minor children. Early in 1891, Samaria petitioned the Court for support from the estate of Jesse, who had died without a Will. Support was granted and the total allowance was $528.25 which comprised most of the estate of Jesse.55
