CASTAGNETTO, Dominico January 23, 1897 Mariposa Gazette: OBITUARY
Another Pioneer gone.
Last Thursday at about 10 o'clock the messenger of death visited the home of Dominico CASTAGNETTO in Hunter's Valley and summoned its venerable owner to appear before his maker.
Mr. CASTAGNETTO was a pioneer of Mariposa county and at the time of his death he was
seventy-five years of age. He was a native of Italy and came to California when he was a young man and has ever since resided here. In his younger days he carried on an extensive merchandise business in Bear Valley and was one of the prominent citizens.
For a number of years prior to his death he has lived quietly with his family on his ranch in Hunter's Valley.
He was married to a very estimable lady, who preceded him to the grave a few years since. They raised a large family of children, six of whom survive their parents.
The funeral took place in Bear Valley on Thursday last and was largely attended by the friends of the deceased.
The sympathies of the entire community is extended to his bereaved relatives.65

BEAR VALLEY ON FIRE
San Joaquin Valley Argus
July 21, 1888
>From Monday's daily
Yesterday ( Sunday) morning a fire started in the Oso House at Bear Valley. The flames spread rapidly and in a few moments the fine hotel the large stables, and all the saloons were on fire, and there is but little of the thriving little mountain town left. The fire is supposed to be purely accidental. The loss will amount to something over twenty thousand dollars. The government store and a few private dwellings are still standing.21

At Bear Valley
While at Bear Valley one day this week the unmistakable signs of industry were apparent, not only by the Grant people but by others. Several new structures are about to be erected. The old Castagnetto store, lately purchased by Mrs. Deadman is being completely renovated, a large cellar occupying about one half of the ground space inside the house has been dug, and the new roof almost completed. The inside is being fitted up for store purposes. John de Silva is doing the carpenter work.
L. B. Chenowith has the contract from Mrs. Trabucco to rebuild the old Castle building adjoining the Odd Fellow's Hall. The building has been dismantled for a great number of years. The building when completed will be quite an addition to the business part of town. The building will be two stories high, the walls of the lower story are stone, the upper story will be of wood. The building will be twenty-four feet wide and seventy feet long. The lower story has already been rented to Geo. A. Long of Mariposa for a meat market, and will be fitted up accordingly. The upper story will be divided into eight rooms, with a hallway through the center. These rooms will be let for offices, etc. Mr. Chenowith, the contractor, expects to have the building completed in thirty days. He was in Merced during the first of the week getting material for the building.
A party from Angels Camp are talking of leasing the lot across the street from the Odd Fellow's Hall to erect a business place on, but this is merely in its incipiency and has assumed no definite shape.
While in town we noticed several strange faces, drawn hither in the search of employment.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barrett of Merced Falls visited Bear Valley Wednesday on business.
Mrs. Newman of San Francisco who spent the greater part of her life in the old town, spent several days there visiting old friends and looking after her various pieces of property.
