Born June 16, 1894 Mariposa Gazette: CASTAGNETTO.- In Bear Valley, on Firday June 8, 1894, to Joseph CASTAGNETTO and wife a daughter.

Cause of death: Diphtheria

Mariposa Gazette, December 12, 1903: CASTAGNETTO, John & Violet -- Deaths from Diphtheria.
Two deaths occurred in the family of Joseph CASTAGNETTO at Bear Valley from diphtheria, the first being that of a little son, John, aged 6 years, 1 month and 20 days, which took place last Saturday, the other being that of a daughter, Violet, aged 9 years, 6 months and 3 days, which occurred Sunday.
The children where stricken with the dread disease about two weeks ago, and it soon developed into the most malignant form. All medical efforts were unavailing and the children passed away after a brief struggle. The funerals were strictly private, owing to the cause of death. At present the other four children of Mr. and Mrs. CASTAGNETTO are suffering with the disease, but they are thought to be about out of danger. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of all in their time of sorrow.65

Mariposa Gazette:
The sudden taking off by death of the two little children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Castagnetto of Bear Valley last Saturday, is a misfortune that awakens the sympathy of all. These children, Violet and John, ages respectively ten and six years, were the light and sunshine of the Castagnetto home. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved parents in their great sorrow and misfortune.

Mariposa Gazette: FATAL DIPHTHERIA CASES
The diphtheria cases reported from Bear Valley last week, and mentioned in the Era of Saturday last, have proved fatal. Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Castagnetto, Violet, aged ten, and John, aged six years, died from the disease last Saturday. Four more of the Castagnetto family are down with the disease, but are in a fair way to recovery. No new cases are reported and the disease is confined to the Castagnetto family. The house has been quarantined and Dr. Kylberg, health officer, has posted printed notices requesting that visiting between the towns, Mt. Bullion and Bear Valley, be suspended for a short time, which request we hope will be generally complied with. Diphtheria is a disease not to be trifled with, and a little precaution taken by each person to guard against contagion, will result in preventing it spreading. Bear Valley is the only town in the county where the disease has made its appearance, and by following the request of Dr. Kylberg in a couple of weeks the disease will have died out.
