ANOTHER FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT
High School Student Meets Death When Car Overturns On Highway
Ruth Berry, seventeen-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Berry of Atwater, was instantly killed, and her three companions sustained minor injuries when the automobile in which they were riding overturned on the Yosemite highway near Tuttle at about 10 o’clock Tuesday night.
Those injured are Miss Helen Barnell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Barnell and a student at the Fresno State Teacher’s College, who sustained cuts and bruises and injuries to her back; Kenneth Guest, an employee of the California Pottery Company who received a sprained hip and scalp wounds, and Harry Gardner, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Gardner and a student at the Merced high school, who suffered scallp wounds and various cuts and bruises.
The party was returning from the Vaughn home near Tuttle, where they had attended a Christian Endeavor meeting, and while traveling along the main highway in the vicinity of the Wilson substation, Guest, who was driving, attempted to pass a car traveling in the same direction and driven by Ray Clark of this city. Just as they were about to pass, two wheels of the Guest car ran off the highway and caused the vehicle to overturn. Miss Berry was pinned under the car and was instantly killed. Guest was also pinned beneath the machine, but Gardner and Miss Barnell, who were riding in the rumble seat were thrown clear of the wreckage.
Coroner Welch was notified and he took charge of the remains of Miss Berry and fixed the time of the inquest for last evening. The injured were taken to Mercy Hospital and after being given first aid treatment they left for their homes.
At an inquest held by Deputy Coroner S. W. Lockwood last evening the jury found that Miss Berry’s death resulted from "a broken neck and fractured skull form the overturning of the automobile driven by Kenneth Guest."
Miss Berry was born in Tennessee July 11, 1910 and the family has been living in California for the past fourteen years, coming to the Atwater section about four years ago. She was one of the most popular students of the Merced high school, and her tragic death is keenly regretted by her numerous friends and school companions, who sincerely sympathize with her bereaved relatives.
Rev. Roberts of Atwater will officiate at the funeral services, which will be held in the Welch & Griffin chapel this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery.21
