"Harbison, Mathew D.," By: Elmer T. Harbison, printed in "Our Calvert Kin, Volume II", Lott, Dewey, page 493-494;
Harbison, Mathew D., Pvt, I, enlisted 21 Dec., 1863 Camp Davis, 3 yrs. Mi 28 Dec 1863. Born in Morgan Co., Ala. 33 yrs old. Farmer. Died 15 July 1864, Rome, Ga. He left his wife Linda with five little boys: Jim, Sam, John, Charlie, William "Billy". Linda died when William "Billy" was six months old. Her sister Emily
took him, and having a baby girl about his age, let them both nurse. The baby girl was Vina Harbison Tingle. Emily kept him till he was seven then Tom Calvert took him and his brother Jim. "Billy" stayed there seven years, then he stayed different places. His brother Jim went to Texas and promised him he would send for him when he could. Jim married after he went to Texas to Doshia Crawford. They had two little girls, then both died. She died first and he took sick at her funeral and was buried a week later in Texas. "Billy" was then about 25. He and his brother John went to Tyler, Texas and brought the two babies back here to raise. Vina was three years old and Jannie was three months old. They had corn bread for Vina to eat, but Jannie was so hungry she cried all the time on the train. A strange man on the train ask what was wrong. They told him they a stop over where he lived. He told them if one of them would go with him, his wife would fix them some sugar teats, that's what she had been taking since her mothers death. John went with him and his wife fixed them, a mixture of butter and sugar tied in a cloth. When they got there they were very tired and took them to Baily Mountain to brother Charlie and Mary who lived where Florence Bailey now lives. Mary had a young baby and let Jannie nurse too. "Billy" entered 160 acres of land below Trade, Alabama where Forrest Hipp now lives and there he raised the girls. Vina married Jim Campbell. They had four children, Lee Roy, Meliner, General and Doshia. Jannie married Griffen Sinyard at age 15. They had six children; Calvurn, Vassie, Retter, Ollis, Doyle and Ethel. Griffen died at age 37. Several years later she (Jannie) married Jack Treharne and had two sons, Frank, died a baby, and George Treharne. Jannie died March 21 1944, at age 56 or 57. "Billy" also paid his brother Sam's way to Texas to bring his Grandmother and Aunt Cenda back here to live with him. His grandmother died at his home. Aunt Cenda was living with them, but had gone visiting someone on Brushy Pond Mountain, took sick and died.
