Catharine, m. James Houlbert of Fredericksburgh. O.C. 28 Feb 1833.
Notes for James (Spouse 1)
James Holbert was born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was German, Dutch; he was the only one in his family to move to Canada where he settled with his new wife Catherine in Roslin, Ontario. They built a farm that has been in the family until 1964. James and his son Robert made bricks on the farm and built a nice brick house that still is as good as ever. It is now owned by Clark Martin.25

James Holbert, born 1796 in Cleveland, Ohio, moved to Hay Bay, Ontario, where he met and married Catherine Fitchett. The wedding took place on 28 Feb 1828, by the posting of banns, and was performed by Rev. Job Deacon, and witnessed by Nicholas Murdoff & David Young. Both made their mark "X" rather than a signature. They obtained 100 acres of Crown Land, con 1, 1ot 17, Huntingdon township, Hastings. James cleared the land and built a log house on the east side of the property, near the road. Before the house was finished, he had to go to Kingston on business, as it was the nearest "big" town, walking all the way. They hadn't any window panes as yet, so Catherine had to sit by the window openings, gun in hand, to keep the wolves from jumping in. Later James and his youngest son, Robert, built a new house from bricks made down in the valley. They lived on this property until they died, and were buried at St. Paul's Cemetery, Roslin, Ont.
James had succumbed several years before Catherine, in 1871, and a small stone marker that had commorated his passing, was removed and cemented into the foundation wall of the house. A larger stone had to be purchased in 1887, to accomodate Catherine's name. The present owners of the home are pleased to have such a conversation piece to show who the original owners of the property were.25
