Notes for Aloysius (Louis) CASSARETTO
Louis Cassaretto, operated the Groveland store and became its owner in 1878. He became a Tuolumne County Pioneer Merchant. Louis arrived from Italy at the call from his sister Rosa, that was married to Noziglia, that was owner of the trading post, in 1876, and between helping her and doing some mining, he became the operator and then owner. The sign over the store's iron doors read, Pioneer Merchant, Dealer of Dry Goods, Boots, Shoes, Fine Groceries, and Provisions. The store carried hardware, wine, liquors, and cigars. He also carried a good supply of clothing and patent medicines and foods. You could order hay, grain, wire for building fences. On the counter was a coffee grinding mill, weighing scale, gold scale, and a twine holder. He and his wife, Adelina ( Lena ) Bruschi, married and lived in a wooden structure at the back of the store, where nine children were born. Louis built the adjoining annex in 1904 with its entrance opening from the street and descending several steps. The store had the first telephone in the area with Rose Cassaretto, the telephone operator for Groveland and surrounding area. It also was the Post Office with again Rose the post mistress, and the stage line stop right in front of the store. Wooden barrels of beans, pickeled fish, sugar, coffee beans, and nails. Pots and pans hanging from the ceiling and walls. The store also carried a good supply of mining items, like picks, lanterns, and mining gold pans. Louis was the owner and overseer of the Kanaka Mine, that was 5 miles out of town, past Big Creek, and had 10 stamp mill and had 10 men working the mine, which he purchased in the 1890s. Also owned 360 acre ranch on Big Creek that he raised hogs, with some cattle, a few horse, with a few apples trees. The ranch had a house and a good barn, and was fenced. A customer at the store, could order hogs from the ranch at Big Creek, dead or live, plus live chickens, and ducks. Louis, showed the registered branding mark of a pioneer ranchera, with the brand of JV and is still registered in the state of California. His brand was number 353 to be filed in Tuolumne County. It also showed that the brand would be located on the left hip of the animal.
Louis, owned the Mt. Zoin Mine, and at one time he operated and worked the Hartford Mine on Priest Grade, when he first came from Italy. Louis married Lena Bruschi at Coulterville, California, Rico said that his grandfather, Francisco Bruschi put on a big show. It was the wedding of the times. Louis, quoting Rico, he was 5'-10" tall and around 200# in weight, and resided in Groveland since 1876. Louis, was doing a thriving business and had a large Indian following, from the Miwok Rancheria at Deer Flat. The Indian trade was mainly in staples, especially sugar. They would come into the store with their gold dust and make a bee line for the sugar barrel. They would even work to get it. That was one sure way that the pioneer women could get a heavy washing done for fifty cents worth of sugar. One day Louis got thoroughly disgusted when some miners came into the store on a Sunday, after they had been drinking and gambling, and they were boisterous and making trouble. Louis picked up a weight from the scale and threw it at the bunch of them. He had no more problems with again. Louis, when in Italy, his name was spelled Luigi, which is means Louis When Glee Mason, and Howard Mason Jr were visiting the cemetery in Sonora, They were at Grandma's Walton , Fannie's mother's grave, and looking up directly to the west, there was a family burial plots of a family called Cazzaretto, and when returning to Stockton and asking Fred (Rico) about this name , he said they were kin form Italy and he only heard of them. When Louis died, the children raised themselves. At his death, he was 51 years, 11 months, 12 days old.
