Note #1, There is a large amount of controversy concerning the birth and parentage of Josiah Canfield. It is thought by some researchers that the marriage date of 1720 should be in fact 1730. This would mean that either Josiah was born out of wedlock or had a mother other than Keziah Ferris. Family legend has it that Josiah was the first and oldest son of Timothy Canfield and that he was raised by Keziah Ferris Canfield. The records for this time period are few and some have been destroyed by fires and to our knowledge there is no evidence of a prior wife. Perhaps there were two marriages to the same wife, one secular and one later by the clergy. There have been other occurrences of this in the Canfield line.
