Deceased Name: Mae Louise Castro Anthony; 1915 - 2011
Mae Louise Castro Anthony of Redding passed away February 13, 2011 at a private residence surrounded by her loving family at the age of 95. Mae was born October 17, 1915 in Redding, California to May and Joe Castro. Mae grew up with three siblings: Joe Castro (deceased), Dorothy Carmona of Redding and Betty Harp of Gridley. She was preceded in death on October 19, 1994 by her husband John William "Bill" Anthony, Jr. Mae and Bill were high school sweethearts and were married on October 20, 1937 and celebrated 57 years together. Mae and Bill had two children, Michael Anthony and Michele Anthony Lincoln, both of Redding.
Mae is survived by both of her children, her two sisters and her five granddaughters, Sheri Schroeder, Lisa Brown, Nicole Peters, ShaKay Mack and Kimberly Keck. She also was blessed with nine great-grandchildren. The happiest moments of Mae's life were when her family was gathered together and she would often refer to her granddaughters as the light of her life.
Mae spent her early childhood in Redding but also lived in Spain, Mexico, and Michigan. Upon her return to Redding as a teenager, she graduated from Shasta High School in 1933 and went on to graduate from cosmetology school in San Francisco. Mae returned to Redding and after a few years working at the Maudy Fox's Salon located in The Lorenz Hotel, she became an entrepreneur when she opened Mae's Beauty Salon in Downtown Redding. While her husband, Bill Anthony, served on the Redding City Council for many years, Mae kept busy with running her own business and becoming involved with several charity organizations throughout Redding.
After over thirty years in business, Mae finally retired and was able to spend more time doing the things she loved such as gardening, painting, traveling, bowling and golfing. Mae was a longtime member of Allen's Golf Course and the Lake Almanor Country Club. She loved golfing and bowling in tournaments throughout California. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and "Nana" to all her family and friends.
