Roscoe "Doc" Curtice, 85, of Sonora died Friday at Sonora Community Hospital.

Mr. Curtice was a native of Clark County, Wash. He lived in Tuolumne County 81 years. He owned and operated Curtice Mobil service station for 20 years. Also, he was a school bus driver for Sonora High School, driving to and from the Groveland area, for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Curtice of Sonora; children, Marty Jo Balciunas ofEl Dorado, Emmy Macfarlane of Denair and Mary Ellen Dexter of Orangevale; brothers, Gerald Curtice of Modesto and Emery Curtice of Calistoga; sisters, Marge Curtice and Louise Snider, both of Modesto; and five grandchildren.
Remembrances may be made to the Roscoe "Doc" Curtice Scholarship Fund Sonora High School, 430 N. Washington St., Sonora 95370.

Laura passed away peacefully at the age of 87 from natural causes at her home in Sonora. Laura was born and raised in Jacksonville, California, where her father owned the Sheafe Hotel. She attended high school in Sonora and graduated from beauty school. Laura married Roscoe C. "Doc" Curtice in 1941 and devoted her life to raising her family, first in Jacksonville on the Tuolumne River, and then relocating to Sonora in 1970 upon the flooding of Jacksonville by the Don Pedro Dam. Laura was preceded in death by her husband in 1996, granddaughter Laurie in 1976 and sisters Mary Trout, Bertha Hanson and Ruth Messenger.
Laura is survived by her three daughters -- Margaret (Marty) Balciunas (husband Al) of El Dorado, California; Emmy Macfarlane (husband Peter) of Denair, California; and Mary Dexter (husband Roger) of Orangevale, California -- five grandchildren -Jessica Macfarlane Holt (husband Jeff); Lina Balciunas Cockrell (husband Chris); Curtice Macfarlane (wife Angie); Sarah Dexter Brackeen (husband John) and Jonas Balciunas (wife Jaclyn) - and two great-grandchildren - Zachary Brackeen and Garrett Holt. Laura will also be missed by her brother, Brad Sheafe, of Grants Pass, Oregon and many other loving family members whom Laura helped raise, mentor and nurture.
Throughout her life, Laura enjoyed traveling, sharing adventures, and celebrating with her family, especially her children and grandchildren, who regarded her as equally a best friend as a mother and grandmother. She also treasured her many friendships and the community in both Jacksonville and Sonora. A memorial and celebration of Laura's life will be held at Laura's home on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Laura's honor to the Doc Curtice Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Sonora Area Foundation, P.O.
