Martin John Glashoff
Martin John Glashoff, a native of Suisun Valley who operated Glashoff's fruit stand on Rockville Road until the early 1980s and was on the Solano Irrigation District board of directors for 24 years, died April 13, 1999, at NorthBay Medical Center. He was 80.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfield.
The Rev. Martin Bergstrom will officiate. Burial will be at Rockville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home.
Born the fifth of six children on Aug. 31, 1918, to Margaret and Hermann Glashoff, Mr. Glashoff attended Suisun Valley Elementary School and Armijo High School, where he was in the school band and on the track team.
He later graduated from the University of California, Davis, with a bachelor's degree in agriculture. He was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity and the university band.
In 1947, he married Elsada Chadbourne, with whom he shared a passion for farming and love of the Suisun Valley. Mr. Glashoff served as a trustee for Suisun Valley Elementary School in the 1950s and '60s.
Elected by landowners within the district, he served six consecutive four-year terms on the Solano Irrigation District board. One of his most notable projects was helping to draft the city of Fairfield/SID agreement that addresses water needs for Fairfield and farming protections in the Suisun Valley.
Mr. Glashoff also served as a board member of Suisun Valley Fruit Growers Association for many years. He also served on the Farm Bureau Board and was president from 1969 to 1971. He was awarded the "Distinguished Service Award" from the Solano County Farm Bureau in 1989.
He was a vocal proponent for the preservation of farming heritage of Suisun Valley. Throughout his childhood and young adulthood he was active in Suisun Valley 4-H club, first as a member and later as a project leader for many years. He farmed land in the Suisun Valley with his brother, Bernold until Bernold Glashoff's retirement in the late 1970s.
Mr. Glashoff passed the farming operation to his son, Larry, in 1984, but continued to remain active in the retail portion of the business until 1993, when he turned his attention to the management of a bakery with his daughter, Nancy.
After Elsada Glashoff died in 1992, Mr. Glashoff married Lori Border in 1993 and worked with her for six years in the bakery until his death.
