From Matthew Harbison's pension applications in 1896 and 1900, he gives his birthplace as Lincoln County, Tenn. Matthew's parents, William Harbison and Eugenia Gullett Harbison died while living in Lincoln County, and Matthew was raised by by his father's cousin (Thomas W. Habison and his wife, Jane Alderson Harbison)


Matthew served in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private in the Confederate States Army (CSA) for the 48th (Vorheeis) Infantry.
