Elmer L. Barnes, a native of Milton Township, died Thursday, Jan. 21, in the home of his daughter Lottie (Mrs. William Dunwell, Riverside, Calif.) with whom he had resided since 1952.
Mr. Barnes operated a grain elevator in Milton 29 years and was head of the Milton water department 29 years also.
The son of Richard and Ella Barnes, he was born March 7, 1873. He was married to Clara Garthwaite, Milton Junction, who died in 1936. His second wife, Frieda, died in 1952. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Dunwell; two sons, George of Milwaukee and Herbert of Indio, Calif.; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Milton Seventh Day Baptist Church, the Rev. Elmo F. Randolph officiating. Kenneth A. Babcock gave the song service. Burial was in Milton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Russell Burdick, A. F. Blomgren, Basil Dunwell, Leland Shaw, Elmer Anderson and Ellwood Shumway.

Lucy Clara Garthwait was born at Milton Junction, Wisconsin, August 12, 1872, the daughter of Lucius H. and Hannah S. Jenkins Garthwait, and died at her home on Madison Avenue in Milton Sunday morning, July 19, 1936.
She was married to Elmer L. Barnes November 15, 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes made their home in Fort Atkinson for about six years, in Milton Junction for two years, and for the past 34 years have lived in Milton. Mrs. Barnes is survived by one daughter, Lottie Luella, Mrs. W. H. Dunwell of Riverside, California; George Richard of Milwaukee; and Herbert Elmer of Santa Maria, California. She is also survived by two brothers: Samuel Garthwait of Norwood Park, Illinois and William Garthwait of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and one sister Mrs. Nettie Tanner of Milton Junction. There are five grandchildren.
In early life Mrs. Barnes joined the Seventh Day Baptist Church of Milton Junction, later moving her membership to Milton. She was especially active in the work of Circle 2 of the Milton church. For better than ten years she maintained a room in her home as a work room for the Circle. She was deeply interested in King's Daughters, for years supervising the sending of Christmas cheer boxes.
Memorial services were held in the Milton Seventh Day Baptist church, Wednesday, July 22. Interment was in the Milton cemetery.
