On the spelling of Fitchett, when my grandfather came over to NYS from Napanee, Ontario and hitched up with grandma (Carrie VanBrocklin) he added the e to the Fitchett name and of course the rest is history ...father and his siblings were all recorded with Fitchette as their last name and of course we were as well.....in fact, grandpa changed his first name from Zina to Zion.... I have no explanation as to why....

When we were growing up our name if pronounced by the family was Fi (i sound as in the word if) ....the Fi ...has the stronger accent or pronunciation .....and ....chette ...a bit different from the Canadian pronunciation of ......Fitch ..it ....with the accent on the Fitch...

I am living on the very farm that my grandfather Fitchette sold to my dad back in 1947...in fact the spot that we have our house on was the site of grandma and grandpa's homestead many years before '47 .....We are in the process of selling the farm to someone outside of the family ...I had four brothers, but not one of them wanted to stay on the farm and work it ...mlb (Text provided by Maureen Louise Fitchette Bartlett: [email protected] )

ZION FITCHETTE DEAD, AGED 84 LaFargeville, April 20, 1963: Zion J.
Fitchette, 84, died at his home on Main street this morning at 10.
The body will be removed from Parker and Hoyt funeral home to the family
home, where the funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Clifford
Sullivan, pastor of the LaFargeville Methodist church, officiating. Burial
will be in Omar cemetery.
Mr. Fitchette is survived by 13 children.
He was born in Napanee, Ontario, July 23, 1878
