The funeral for Vera McDermott Fitchette, 91, LaFargeville, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Thana Kibbe, pastor of LaFargeville United Methodist Church, officiating. Spring burial will be in Omar Cemetery.
Mrs. Fitchette died at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the extended care facility of Edward John Noble Hospital-Samaritan, Alexandria Bay, where she lived for three years.
There will be a calling hour from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
Surviving are two sons, Byron, Clayton, and Michael, LaFargeville; three daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Dorothy) Vaadi and Mrs. Steve (Marian) Vaadi, both of LaFargeville, and Mrs. Robert (Ethel) Freeman, Patterson, N.J.; a brother, Donald McDermott, Theresa; two sisters, Louise Ayen, Hammond, and Doris McDermott, Rome; 17 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Cathryn, died in infancy. Two sisters, Mary Helfert and Ruth Simpson, and four brothers, Raymond, Kenneth, Gordon and Leslie McDermott, died before her.
Born Oct. 29, 1904, in the town of Orleans, daughter of Peter and Lois Morrow McDermott, he attended local schools and married James C. Fitchette on Jan. 7, 1925.
The couple lived in LaFargeville, later moving to Honey Flats, where they farmed for many years.
They returned to LaFargeville, where Mrs. Fitchette was a custodian at LaFargeville Central School, retiring in 1971. Mr. Fitchette died June 6, 1981.
