Marquis E. Fitchette, 85, Bailey Settlement Road, died Wednesday at his home, where he was under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.
Mr. Fitchette was a farmer on Fitchette Road for many years and then worked at Crowley Foods. He retired from there and then went to work for the state Department of Environmental Conservation in the Green Thumb program, retiring about 10 years ago.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in the town of Alexandria, son of Zion and Carrie VanBrocklin Fitchette, he graduated from LaFargeville High School and from Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute.
He married Esther Rice of Stone Mills on Nov. 8, 1947, at the LaFargeville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roberts Mallabar officiating.
Surviving besides his wife are six sons and three daughters-in-law, Terry, and his companion, Linda Henderson, Martin and Judy, Kim and Kimberly, and Charlie and his fiance, Sylvia McMurphy, all of LaFargeville, Dale, Washington state, and Jeffrey and Barbara, Watertown; a daughter and her husband, Monica and Mark Schroder, Watertown; a brother, Thomas, LaFargeville; two sisters, Bertha Bauter and Beatrice Steele, both of LaFargeville, two grandsons, seven granddaughters and three great-granddaughters.
Five brothers, James, Eugene "Jack," Gerald, Richard and Paul, and five sisters, Ellen Kirkby, Persis Wilkie, Pearl Shoulette, Josephine Fisk and Ruby Robbins, died before him.
The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Thana M. Kibbe, pastor of LaFargeville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Omar Cemetery.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to the LaFargeville United Methodist Church.

The funeral for Esther K. Fitchette, 75, Route 180, will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa, with the Rev. Edgar Hunter, retired Methodist minister, officiating. Spring burial will be in Omar Cemetery.
Mrs. Fitchette died Monday morning in Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.
Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting.
Born May 22, 1928, in Stone Mills, daughter of William H. and Frances Smith Rice, she graduated from LaFargeville High School and attended the Watertown School of Commerce.
She married Marquis E. Fitchette on Nov. 8, 1947, at the LaFargeville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roberts Mallabar officiating. Mr. Fitchette died May 14.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Monica and Mark Schroeder, Watertown; six sons and three daughters-in-law, Terry, and his companion Linda Henderson, Martin and Judy, Kim and Kimberly, and Charlie, and his fiance, Sylvia McMurphy, all of LaFargeville, Dale, Washington state, and Jeffrey and Barbara, Watertown; a sister, Emma Nier, LaFargeville, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
