A graveside service for Richard S. Fitchette Sr., 79, of 40653 County Route 2, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, in Plessis Cemetery.
Mr. Fitchette died April 19 at his home.
Arrangements are with Frederick Bros. Funeral Home, Theresa.
Born June 21, 1919, in the town of Alexandria, son of Zion and Carrie Van Brocklin Fitchette, he graduated from LaFargeville High School and Canton Agricultural and Technical Institute. He married Shirley M. Cornaire on Jan. 23, 1944, at St. John's Catholic Church. She died Aug. 6, 1990.
Mr. Fitchette and his wife owned and operated a dairy farm on Alexandria Center Road for 29 years. He was also an assessor for the town of Alexandria for several years. He helped paint the Thousand Islands Bridge, Collins Landing, and served on the LaFargeville Central School Board.
In World War II, Mr. Fitchette was a staff sergeant and aerial gunner in the Army Air Corps. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and an Air Medal. Mr. Fitchette was a member of the LaFargeville American Legion, Klock-Smith Post 1788.
Following his wife's death, he moved into Gordon Court Apartments, Alexandria Bay, where he lived until 1998.
Surviving are three sons, Richard S. Jr., Oswegatchie, Melvin W., Ogdensburg, and Vernon J., Vernal, Utah; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Maureen L.) Bartlett, LaFargeville, Mrs. Daniel (Kathy A.) Fisher, Geneva, Mrs. Louis (Eileen F.) Lewandowski, East Greenbush, and Mrs. Jack (Jeanne M.) McGee, Miami Lakes, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Roland (Bertha) Bauter and Mrs. G. Douglas (Beatrice) Steele, both of LaFargeville; two brothers, Marquis and Thomas, both of LaFargeville, and numerous grandchildren.
A son, Carl L., died April 1, 1998. Five sisters, Pearl Shoulette, Persis Wilkie, Ruby Robbins, Ellen Kirkby and Josephine Fisk, and three brothers, Jack, James and Gerald, died before him. Another brother, Paul, died in infancy.
Donations may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County or to the LaFargeville, Redwood or Alexandria Bay rescue squad.

Shirley Fitchette, 65, Plessis, wife of Richard S. Fitchette, died Monday afternoon in Edward John Noble Hospital, Alexandria Bay. She had been ill two years with a heart condition.
A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Cyril's Catholic Church, Alexandria Bay, with the Rev. James L. Meehan officiating.
There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Frederick Brothers Funeral Home, Theresa. Donations may be made to the Alexandria Bay Rescue Squad.
Besides her husband, surviving are four sons, Richard J., Dexter, Melvin W., Ogdensburg, Vernon J., Vernal, Utah, and Carl L., LaFargeville; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Maureen L.) Bartlett, LaFargeville, Mrs. Daniel (Kathy A.) Fisher, Rochester, Mrs. Jack (Jeanne M.) McGee, Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Louis (Eileen) Lewendowski, Albany; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Cornaire, Albany, Ga., and Richard Cornaire, Jacksonville, Fla.; and seven sisters, Mrs. Mildred Gunderson, Weston, Pa., Mrs. May Sharpe, Niagara Falls, Mrs. Mickey (Evelyn) Wetterhahn, Rochester, Mrs. William (Rose) Bell, Watertown, Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Scirrotto, Glenolden, Pa., Mrs. Raymond (Theresa) Fernandez, also of Glenolden, and Mrs. Caroline Twyman, Palm Beach, Fla.
Two brothers, Vernon and Maurice Cornaire, died before her.
Born Nov. 10, 1924 in Great Bend, the daughter of Maurice J. and Marie Axon Cornaire, she moved as a child with her family to Clayton, where she was graduated from Clayton High School.
She married Richard S. Fitchette of LaFargeville Jan. 23, 1944, in St. John's Church, LaFargeville. The couple farmed in that area for most of their married life.
