Notes for Alfred Marcus (Spouse 1)
Alfred became well known in the ALA, GA, MS and TN, as a gospel song-writer and Editor for the Sacred Harp Music Company, Cullman, AL.
His obituary, as given in the 1977 Edition of the “Original Sacred Harp” songbook reads as follows: “On December 19, 1968, death claimed Alfred Marcus Cagle, the senior member of the Original Sacred Harp Music Committee, and he was laid to rest in the New Georgia Church Cemetery, near Villa Rica, Georgia, where his wife, Inez Lee Cagle, presently resides. Mr Cagle was born in Polk County, Georgia on October 5, 1884. He was the elder son of Jesse and Samaria Duke Cagle. When he was quite young, (they) moved to Cullman County, AL, and he grew to manhood on a farm near Cullman, AL. He was deeply interested in Sacred Harp Music and attended singing schools taught by Seaborn N Denson. He became a leading singer and his compositions appeared in all revisions of the Sacred Harp since the 1911 James Revision. His authority on Dispersed Harmony was undisputed and unsurpassed.”55
