Giovanni Oliva (Eugenia’s husband, my greatgrandfather) was from Genoa: not surprising that as a young immigrant in California in the 1880s he married a girl whose father was from Rapallo, just down the coast from Genoa. The ranching connection may also be meaningful, as Giovanni Oliva worked in the produce business in and around San Francisco. Apparently, he did well, because he retired to live off of investments around the age of 40. There used to be in my youth an Oliva building on Columbus Avenue in San Francisco that was his. Giovanni was apparently a good friend of A.P. Giannini — my father used to tell stories of going to lunch with his Grandfather Oliva and Giannini.738
