HORACE A. GREELEY IS SUMMONED BY DEATH
Horace A. Greeley, one of the best known residents of the Red Cloud section, died very suddenly while visiting at the home of a neighbor last Tuesday noon. Mr. Greeley, apparently in good health, had been working during the forenoon, building and repairing fence on the George White homestead on Buckhorn Mountain. At noon he and his companion, Lee Maple, ate heartily of the noonday meal and had returned to their work. Mr. Greeley became ill and complained of pains in his chest and asked Mr. Maple to go to the telephone and have Mrs. Greeley and their son to come to him at once, evidently realizing that his condition was serious. Mr. Maple to go to the telephone and have Mrs. Greeley and their son to come to him at once evidently realizing that his condition was serious. Mr. Maple went to the Shilling ranch–about two miles distant–to telephone and when he returned to the cabin, he found Mr. Greeley had passed away.
Coroner D. E. Bertken and Sheriff Castagnetto went to Buckhorn immediately and an inquest was held, bringing in a verdict of death from heart disease. The body was removed to Coulterville and later to the home of the deceased on Greeley Hill, where the funeral was held on Thursday, interment being made in the family plot at Coulterville.
Horace A. Greeley, known from childhood by his many friends as "Doc" was born at the old Greeley home in the Red Cloud district. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Watson Greeley, were pioneer settlers and "Doc" had spent his entire life time there. He was 57 years of age and a member of Coulterville Lodge of Odd Fellows.
Mr. Greeley followed farming and teaming all of his life. He was a kind and devoted husband and father and a faithful friend in time of sorrow and trouble.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Greeley, two sons, Laurence and Laverne of Red Cloud, a daughter, Mrs. Floyd Gardner of Stockton; four brothers, Harry and Burnham Greeley of Coulterville, William Greeley of Santa Maria, and Frank Greeley of Oakland, and three sisters, Mrs. Alex Guerra of Merced, Mrs. C. I. Mentzer and Mrs. Nellie Gassolo of Coulterville. 21
