Joseph H. Dent was born in Lincolnshire, England in the late 1700’s. Nancy Tong was born 20 Mar 1772 (other records indicate 1763) in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, England. they emigrated from England with their young family in 1804, settling in Oxford, Chenango Co., NY. they brought two horsehide trunks and a china bowl from England, which are still valued heirlooms of the family. In 1805, they settled on Ferris Hill near Roxbury, Delaware Co., NY. Five sons and three daughters that were born to this union grew tomature years. Nancy died on 01 Nov 1813, and is buried in the old cemetery near the Methodist Church in Grand Gorge, Delaware Co., NY. Her tombstone indicates she died at the age of 40, conflicting with recorded dates of birth and death. The epitaph on her tombstone is Job 19:25 “I know that my redeemer liveth.” After Nancy’s death, Joseph remarried and fathered another son. He moved with his second wife to Licking Co., OH. Joseph died of bileoris collera in February, 1830, at the home of his son George in OH.
