Notes for Jennings (Spouse 1)
Jennings NIX b 1803, Georgia

Jennings and his family, and maybe many others, moved from South Carolina to the Altoona area of North central Alabama during the very early 1850s. Jennings is listed on the U.S. Census Index in South Carolina in 1830 and also in 1850. But he is listed in Alabama in 1860. His family at that time included four sons; Tyre, Daniel, William, and Thomas Alexander. They were all married and most had small children. Jennings also had one daughter, Mary Ann, But I have not found a spouse for her. I have identified maybe 50% of the descendants for the first three sons. Tyre’s and Daniel’s families mostly stayed in North Central Alabama. William and his young bride however soon returned to live next to her parents in South Carolina, and their family populated that part of the South. I have not been able to trace Mary Ann, but am still looking and expect a break thru any time. Thomas Alexander had two sons in Alabama, but I have not been able to find that family after the Civil War.

Jennings’ wife, Lucinda (Letty) Alexander died soon after they reached Alabama, and Jennings at age 53 married Temperance (Tempy) Poole Ellison, the widow of John R. Ellison, also from South Carolina. Jennings and Tempy had three additional sons and they all had large families. Jennings and Tempy are both buried in a family cemetery at Ellison’s Cross Road in Altoona, Etowah County, Alabama. At this time I do not know the burial location of either of their first spouses.

I started this project because it seemed to be a simple learning session for a person new to genealogy, and because it has a personal meaning to me. My Grandson is named for Jennings, and I remember when I was a small boy of about 8 or 10 my Grandfather showed me his Great Grandfathers grave at EllisonÕs Cross Road. This has been a learning exercise, albeit not simple. I have identified over 569 direct descendants of Jennings, and the total continues to climb as I make additional finds.

Buried at Ellison's Cross Roads, Altoona, Etowah County, Alabama. Marker list dob as 1803 and dod as 24 Feb, 1885.

(Update 21 Feb 2005 by Dalton NIX)
I have now completed all of Jennings children and can give you that if you want it. I just completed finding William's brother, Thomas Alexander. He came to Alabama with the rest of the family and with his wife Elizabeth GASSAWAY. I also found her father William W. GASSAWAY, he came to Alabama with his second wife. But I lost them all after the civil war, until just recently. I found that Thomas Alexander died in the last four months of the Civil war and that Elizabeth and her father moved on to Arkansas. I have found Elizabeth living with her married daughter. Also filled the family with three sons and two daughters before Thomas went off to war. That means that all four of Jennings sons served for the South and two did not return. None of the three sons by the second wife served, they were all too young. One of his step sons however did serve in the same unit as Thomas.
