NOTES:
Charles Cheseldine was the second son of Posey Cheseldine. The family always called Izora his mother, but evidence I have found indicates that he was born prior to Nancy Sims Cheseldine's death. He was so young at his mother's death that he probably called Izora, mother.

Charles married Elizabeth ( Minnie) Minshall. She was called Pet by the family. The story in the family is that Pet's grandmother was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson's brother, Randolph. The History of Madison Co. does not indicate this fact. What is fact is that John Jefferson was the son of Leonard Jefferson. If Leonard was a brother to Randolph Jefferson the families are related. That fact is not presently a proven. Uncle Charlie, as my mother called him, died along time before I was born. However, I remember that my mother visited Aunt Pet frequently and took me along. Mother was very fond of Pet and her sons Raymond and Kenneth.

Uncle Charlie inherited the big Cheseldine home on High Street in London, Ohio where we went to visit when I was a child. Charlie inherited part of his father's business and became a wealthy merchant in London. He died at the young age of 44 after a lengthy illness. and is buried in London. Raymond and Kenneth were still boys when he died. He evidently left Aunt Pet well off, for she lived in the Cheseldine home until she was quite old. Her cousin, Urcel, lived with her. She sent both Raymond and Kenneth to Ohio Wesleyn University.

I grew up thinking that Uncle Charlie was the beloved son of Posey Cheseldine. He was the successful middle child who accomplished the things in life important to his father. I, also, believe that Nancy died leaving him this child to raise, and he did a great job, a job of which Nancy would have been proud. I find it interesting to note that Charles died at such a young age, but so did his mother and step-mother. According to the Madison Co. History he was ill for a year.

NOTES:
I remember Aunt Pet, as my mother always called Elizabeth Minshall Cheseldine, wife of Charles Cheseldine. She presided over the old Cheseldine home on High Street in London, Ohio when I was a child. Even though her husband Charles Cheseldine had died before I was born, we went to see Aunt Pet whenever we could. My mother loved her dearly. I have a letter that Aunt Pet wrote my mother on her 21st birthday.

Pet was the daughter of Wyatt Minshall and Elizabeth Fisher. According to Sue Cheseldine Huntington, she was the granddaughter of Libby Fisher, great niece of Thomas Jefferson. The great-granddaughter of Randolph Jefferson, brother of Thomas Jefferson.

Current and ongoing research indicates that Leonard Jefferson and Thomas Jefferson were 3rd cousins--and Leonard is NOT related to Randolph
except as a 3rd cousin.

The following update to the CHESELDINE/JEFFERSON linkage provide by Jeanne Cullen as received from Herbert Barger, Jefferson historian. Herbert’s wife is a first cousin to Thomas Jefferson and they have done extensive documented research on the Jefferson lines.

Posey Cheseldine, b. 1822 in St. Mary's Co., MD, father to Charles Cheseldine and father-in-law to Minnie Minshall Cheseldine, left Maryland in his teens, (around the late 1830's), and worked in Cincinnati, then settled in Williamsburg, Ohio and lastly in London OH. Leonard Jefferson, b.1778 in Talbot Co., MD, married to Barbara Nichols in Frederick Co., in 1806. (Talbot Co. is across the Chesepeake Bay, northeast of the Cheseldine holdings in St. Mary's Co., MD). Leonard moved to Ohio around 1820, possibly earlier, living in Fayette, Ross and Union areas. Leonard's great-granddaughter, Minnie Minshall, would marry Posey's son, Charles Cheseldine in 1890, London, Ohio and lived most of her life there. It was not uncommon for East-coasters to seek a new beginning in Ohio, the new "western" territory in the early 1800's.
