Notes for Eva Emily COULTER
Spelled Emiley in obituary
Mr. G. Cardy student minister Grace United Church Harrowsmith and Rev. B. Smyth of St. Pauls Anglican Sydenham officiated at the funeral.
It has been mentioned that Eva was born on Grindestone Island which is an American island near Gananoque. However, 1861 and 1871 census records has the family correctly located on Wolfe Island. The family farm is located on the Island in 1878.

Kingston Whig Standard - Fri. Sept 26, 1952 "Gardening Good Hobby Says Oldster". by Fred B. Pense
Retired from farm in 1944 and moved to Harrowsmith.
"This year I raised 30,000 tomato plants which I sold to parties in all parts of the country. I also had about 10,000 cabbage plants and there was a ready sale for them." It was noted that the summer was very hot. His garden had some beautiful Spanish onions and cauliflower. His four daughters are listed and Ella's position at Ont. Hospital is noted. It is also mentioned that Mr. and Mrs. Smith are in reasonably good health. There is a photo of Arthur holding a cabbage in the back yard of his Church St home.
His daughter Ella said that her father was not a very good farmer. She was refering to the farm in Hartington where it was very difficult to make a profit. Yet he raised his girls and saw to it that Lena became a teacher, Ella and Mamie became nurses. This would involve supporting their education to the high school level. His market gardening of plants and produce must be considered successful in light of his support of his family.
