Russel remembers his Aunt Lena in two settings. As a young child he remembers the farm on what is now called the Alton Road. It was not large or prosperous but it seemed productive to a young child. He remebers the milk cans being transferred to the roadside stand for pickup. Uncle Schyler used an old Ford with the rumble seat removed and converted into a truck. He also recalls family outings to pick blueberries in the bush. The reward for such "boring" work was always a fresh blueberry pie. Uncle Schyler was always working at odd jobs as a carpenter. When he retired from farming, giving the property to Vernon his son by his previous marriage, he and Lena moved to an apartment at the "five" corners above the bank. Here she was telephone operator for the village. Uncle Schyler built a small house near the United Church in Harrowsmith by himself with assistance from friends. It had a number of the Smith family pieces of funiture and the memorable buck trophy head on the wall. Deer hunting was Schyler's passion. He was a member in long standing with Argyle Lodge IOOF in Harrowsmith. Russel remembers his aunt as being happy and outgoing while on the farm. Sometime after the move to the village she had nerve problems which hospitalised her. She became less talkative withdrawn and always nervous of activity around her.
