EFFIE ETHEL CRUMMETT: JAMES ELLIS and EFFIE ELLIS A LOCAL HOUSE FIRE HOSPITALIZES COUPLE An Okmulgee couple was listed in serious condition Monday at Tulsa hospital after being involved in a house fire Sunday morning. Fire Chief Tom Porter said Jim and Effie Ellis were inside their residence, 921 North Sherman, when the fire started. The blaze was reported at 7:02 a.m. Sunday and firefighters were on the scene for one hour and 43 minutes. Porter said the victims were initially taken to Okmulgee Memorial Hospital and later transported to the Tulsa hospital. A spokesperson at Tulsa`s Hillcrest Medical Center reported the Ellis couple was listed in serious condition Monday. She said Jim Ellis had burns on 10 percent of his body and Effie Ellis has burns on 4 percent of her body. Porter said firefighters believe the fire began because of a leak in the kitchen range. The living room, front bedroom and the kitchen were fully involved when fire fighters arrived. The fire chief said Jim Ellis told fire fighters he went to the range and turned it on and returned to his bedroom. He heard some crackling noises and went to investigate, according to the fire chief. Porter said Ellis opened his bedroom door and was overcome by a flash from the fire.
