Notes for Giles (Spouse 1)
From Dave Parman email 4 Feb 02 (Dave Parman at [email protected]): To the north of Virginia, Giles Parman, born 1732 in Chester, Pennsylvania (a few miles southwest of Philadelphia), around 1755 married Mary Dodson, born about 1736, the daughter of Thomas Dodson and Mary Prigg. They moved up to what is now Luzerne County where they had a son named Giles Franklyn Parman in 1758. This beautiful and fertile territory was claimed by both Pennsylvania and Connecticut, which claimed the Pacific Ocean as its western boundary, and was mostly settled by people from Connecticut from 1750-1760. The area was highly disputed due to the French and Indian War, which interfered with how it was settled, and the Iroquois Indians reneged on their agreement with Connecticut in 1754 and resold it to William Penn (1644-1718), the English Quaker colonizer who founded Pennsylvania in 1681. It was Penn who said, “A nation must be ruled by God, or it will be ruled by tyrants.” Many settlers in America were beginning to think the latter.
