In the Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island by John OsborneAustin, he writes that on 1665, May 3 that George Gardiner "was before the Assembly upon the petition of Horod Long, alias Gardiner, his wife. She declared that when her father died (in England), she was sent to London, and was married unknown to her friends, to John Hicks, privately in the under church of Paul's, called St. Faith's Church, she being between thirteen and fourteen years old. She then came to New England with her husband, and lived at Weymonth two and a half years, thence coming to Rhode Island about the year 1640, and there lived ever since till she came to Pettacomscott. Soon after coming to Rhode Island, there happened a difference between her and her husband, John Hicks, and he went away to the Dutch..." It goes on to say that Horod Gardiner had lived with her last husband eighteen or twenty years...which would be 1645. George's earliest records show him to be in Rhode Island by 1638. Benoni is believed to have been born around 1637. George, Jr. is said to have been born in 1647. In the Gardiner-Gardner Genealogy by Clara Gardiner Miller and John Milton Stanton that John Hicks was mentioned in Rhode Island records several times, at the General Court held at Newport on 14 Sept 1640 he was admitted as a freeman, his name was found on the Court Roll of Freeman dated 16 Mar 1641, he was a member of the Petit Jury in March of 1641/2, he was a member of the Grand Jury at the General Court held at Newport on 3 Dec 1643, he was brought to court for beating his wife, Harwood Hicks in 1644.
